Sequential or H-Pattern

This is the decision that matters, and it comes down to what you drive. An H-pattern gate suits road cars, classic racing, trucks and anything where finding the right gear is part of the job. A sequential lever is one pull back and one push forward, which is what modern rally and touring cars actually use.

If you drive both, a dual mode unit converts between the two rather than making you buy one of each. It is worth deciding this before you look at prices, because it narrows the range more than anything else will.

What We Stock

MOZA covers both patterns: the HGP is the H-pattern box and the SGP is the sequential lever, and each bundles with the HBP handbrake if you want the pair. The Logitech G RS H-Shifter is the entry point into H-pattern, and it also comes bundled with the Logitech handbrake.

The VNM Simulation Dual-Mode shifter handles both patterns in one unit, and the Turtle Beach VelocityOne Multi-Shift adds a handbrake mode to an H-gate. The MOZA AB9 Active Shifter sits at the top of the range. Pair any of them with our sim racing handbrakes if you are building for rally.

Gates, Knobs and Mounting

An H-pattern shifter is only as useful as its gate. VNM make 5R, 6R and 7R plates, so you can set the gate to five, six or seven speeds plus reverse, which matters if you run a mix of older cars and modern GT machinery. MOZA also sell a separate active shifter knob.

Mounting is the other thing to sort before you order. Most shifters expect to bolt to a rig side plate or clamp to a desk, and the bolt pattern is worth checking against your sim racing cockpit first. A shifter that moves under load feels worse than no shifter at all.

Sim Racing Shifter FAQs

Sequential or H-pattern, if I can only buy one?

H-pattern, for most people. It covers road cars, classics and trucks, and you can still drive a sequential car using the paddles on your wheel. A sequential lever is the better first buy only if rally or modern touring cars are most of what you drive.

Do I need a shifter for Formula or GT racing?

No. Those cars change gear on the paddles, so a shifter sits unused. Buy one when you start driving cars that have a gearstick, not before.

Will a sim racing shifter work on PlayStation or Xbox?

It depends on the model, and usually on routing through a compatible wheelbase rather than plugging straight in. Tell us your platform and wheelbase and we will confirm it before you order.

Can I change how many gears my H-pattern shifter has?

On some, yes. Swapping the gate plate changes the pattern between five, six and seven speeds plus reverse. It is model specific, so check the product page rather than assuming.
