Check the version before you buy

This is the part that catches people out. The same wheel is usually sold in console-specific versions, and the PlayStation version and the Xbox version are different products with different part numbers. A wheel built for one will not simply work on the other, and that is a licensing decision made by the console makers, not something a cable or adapter gets around.

Every wheel on this page is listed with its PlayStation version where one exists, so you are choosing the right variant at the point of sale rather than discovering it after delivery. If you also game on PC, the PlayStation versions here work on PC as well.

Wheel and hub, or a complete bundle

Some ranges split the rim from the electronics. You buy a hub that carries the console licensing and the connection, then choose the rim that suits how you drive, and swap rims later without replacing the expensive part. It is the cheaper way in if you already own pedals.

A bundle gives you the base, rim and pedals together, matched and ready to bolt down. If this is your first setup, a bundle removes the guesswork about what pairs with what. Our racing simulator bundles range goes a step further and includes the frame.

Gear, belt and direct drive

Entry-level wheels drive the force feedback through gears. They are affordable and perfectly playable, but the feedback is coarser and you can hear the mechanism working. Belt driven wheels smooth that out and carry more detail, which is the step most drivers notice first.

A direct drive wheel mounts the rim straight onto the motor, so nothing sits between the road surface and your hands. Kerbs, the front tyres letting go and the rear stepping out all arrive as distinct sensations rather than a general rumble. It costs more and it needs a solid mount, but it is the difference people describe as feeling the car rather than the wheel.

Where you are going to mount it

Entry-level wheels clamp to a desk and that is genuinely fine for them. The forces are low enough that a solid table holds still. Once you move to a stronger wheel the clamp becomes the weak point, because a desk that shifts under load takes the precision straight back out of the steering.

What a wheel changes on PlayStation

A controller gives you roughly a centimetre of stick travel to place the car with. A wheel gives you most of a turn, so small corrections become possible and you can feel through the rim when the front tyres start to slide instead of guessing from the picture.

The gain is largest in simulation titles that model tyre behaviour properly, and it shows up as consistency rather than one dramatic lap. Pedals matter just as much here, which is why our sim racing pedals range is worth reading before you finalise a budget.

Picking between the brands

PlayStation steering wheel FAQs

Can I use any steering wheel on PS5?

No. A wheel has to be made in a PlayStation version to work with the console. Wheels sold in an Xbox version will not work on PlayStation, and there is no adapter that changes this, so check the variant before ordering.

Will my PS4 wheel work on PS5?

Often yes, but not always, and it can depend on the individual game as well as the wheel. Tell us which wheel you have and we will confirm it before you buy anything else.

Is a steering wheel worth it on PlayStation?

If you play racing simulations regularly, yes. The extra steering range makes small corrections possible and you feel grip changes through the rim, which mostly shows up as more consistent lap times rather than one fast lap.

What is the difference between gear, belt and direct drive?

Gear driven wheels are the most affordable and the least detailed. Belt driven wheels are smoother and quieter. Direct drive mounts the rim straight to the motor for the clearest feedback, and needs a rigid mount to be worth it.

Do I need a cockpit, or will a desk do?

A desk clamp is fine for entry-level wheels. For a direct drive wheel a stand or cockpit is strongly recommended, because the forces involved will move a desk and you lose the precision you paid for.

Do pedals come with the wheel?

Bundles include pedals. Wheel-only and hub-only listings do not, so check what is in the box on the product page if you are buying the parts separately.

Yes. Everything we sell is sourced through official channels, with warranty support handled locally by the Gamer Gear Direct team, alongside your rights under Australian Consumer Law.
