What a D-BOX G5 actuator does

A G5 actuator is a powered column that sits under the rig and drives it in response to what the car is doing in the sim. Because the input is telemetry rather than a sound channel, kerbs, braking, weight transfer and surface texture arrive as movement you read through the seat.

That is the line between motion and vibration. If you want the texture of the road surface without lifting anything, bass shakers do that job for far less. D-BOX moves the whole platform, which is what lets you feel the car settle and rotate.

Three actuators or four

The G5 3250i runs three actuators and the G5 4250i runs four. Three driven points are enough to tilt the rig front to back, roll it side to side and lift it as a whole. The fourth adds another driven corner, which spreads the load across the frame and gives the platform finer control over how it settles.

Both come as kits with the mounting brackets included. If you already run actuators and want to extend what you have, the single G5 actuator and the Trak Racer TR Move base for a third actuator are listed on their own.

Fitting D-BOX to your rig

Actuators bolt on through mounting brackets made for aluminium profile frames, sold singly and in pairs. If your frame will not take brackets directly, the Trak Racer TR Move platform bases carry the actuators underneath instead and the rig sits on top of them.

A motion platform is only ever as good as the frame above it, because a rig that flexes absorbs the movement before you feel it. The sim racing cockpits range covers frames built to take that load, and the Trak Racer hardware range holds the TR Move parts.

How D-BOX compares with the other motion options

D-BOX drives the rig from underneath with an actuator at each mounting point. Sigma Integrale motion platforms take a different route, moving the seat and rig together on a frame of their own. Both read the sim's telemetry. They differ in how the movement reaches you and in what they need underneath them.

Our take

What you are actually buying with D-BOX is earlier information. The actuators move fast and in small increments, so the rear stepping out reaches you through the seat a beat before you would have read it on screen, and you start correcting instead of reacting. That is the part that turns up in your lap times rather than just in how impressive the first ten minutes feel. What it asks in return is a frame that does not flex, because any give in the rig is information you paid for and never received.

Does D-BOX work with the sims I play?

D-BOX motion is driven by telemetry from the title itself, and the list of supported sims is maintained by D-BOX rather than by us. The major racing and flight titles are well covered. Check the current list against what you actually play before you order.

Can I add D-BOX to a rig I already own?

Often, yes. Actuators mount through brackets made for aluminium profile rigs, and the Trak Racer TR Move bases give you a route if your frame will not take brackets directly. Call us with your rig and we will tell you what fits.

What is the difference between the 3250i and the 4250i?

The 3250i runs three actuators and the 4250i runs four. Four driven points spread the load across the rig and give the platform more control over how it moves. Three is the more common place to start.

Do I need a particular kind of rig?

You need one that does not flex. A motion platform pushes against the frame, and any give in the chassis takes the edge off the movement before it reaches you. Aluminium profile frames are the usual choice for this reason.

Is D-BOX the same thing as a bass shaker?

No. A bass shaker vibrates the seat or the frame while the rig stays put. D-BOX physically moves the platform. Plenty of people run both, because they do different jobs.
