Socks or shoes?

Both are used and the argument is older than sim racing. Shoes give you a defined sole and a consistent pedal face contact. Socks give you more of what the pedal is actually doing, because there is less material between your foot and the plate.

On a load cell brake that difference matters more than it sounds, because you are braking to a pressure rather than to a distance and your foot is the only thing measuring it. Most people who switch to a load cell pedal set end up preferring socks for exactly that reason. We stock socks, not shoes, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.

What makes a sim sock different

A grip pattern on the sole, and that is most of it. A normal sock slides on an aluminium pedal plate, and a foot that slides is a braking point you cannot repeat. The grip sole holds the foot where you put it.

Past that it is breathable fabric so your feet are not soaked an hour in, a reinforced heel and toe because pedal plates are abrasive, and a snug fit so nothing bunches under the ball of your foot. None of it is exotic. It is a sock built for one job.

What we stock

Two brands. Sparco make the Hyperspeed, which comes from an actual motorsport background and is the more understated of the two. Sudspeed make theirs to match their gloves, so if you want the set to look like a set, that is the one.

Sudspeed also sell a gloves and socks bundle, which works out cheaper than buying the two separately and is the usual choice for someone kitting out a new cockpit from scratch.

Sim racing socks FAQs

Are sim racing socks or shoes better?

It depends what you brake with. Shoes suit drivers who want a firm consistent sole; socks suit drivers who want to feel the pedal. On load cell and hydraulic brakes, where you are applying pressure rather than travel, most people end up in socks.

Can I just use normal socks?

You can, and plenty do. The difference is the grip sole. An ordinary sock slides on an aluminium pedal plate, and once your foot moves mid-corner the braking point you practised is gone.

Do they actually make you faster?

Not on their own, no. What they do is make your braking repeatable, and repeatable is what turns one quick lap into a consistent stint. Anyone promising lap time from a sock is overselling it.

Do sim racing socks work with pedals that have heel rests?

Yes, and they are arguably more useful there, because a heel rest means your foot pivots in one place rather than repositioning each time. The grip sole is what keeps that pivot point honest.

What size should I order?

They follow normal sock sizing. If you are between sizes take the smaller one, because a loose sim sock bunches under the foot and undoes the grip.

Do you sell sim racing shoes?

Not currently. This collection is socks only. If shoes are what you are after we would rather point you elsewhere than sell you the wrong thing, and you are welcome to call and talk it through.
