What a sim glove is actually for

A motorsport glove is built to a fire standard first and everything else second. A sim glove has no such constraint, so the whole design goes into grip, breathability and letting your fingers move. That is why a thin pair intended for a simulator usually beats a proper race glove at a desk.

The reason to wear one at all is the rim. Suede and Alcantara grip beautifully when clean and go slick as soon as your hands warm up, and on a strong direct drive wheelbase that is the moment you stop being able to hold a consistent line. The Sudspeed range

The gloves share a construction and differ in colourway, so the choice is mostly aesthetic. Blackout is the plain one. Ascari, Raidillon, Mulsanne and Brooklands are named after corners and are the louder end. Alpha, Dame, Bruce and the number 51 fill in between.

All of them use a silicone pattern across the palm and fingers for grip, and a light breathable back so your hands are not swimming by the end of a stint. Sizing runs snug, which is what you want, because a loose sim glove moves on the rim and defeats the point.

Socks, and why they exist

The same idea applies at the other end of the rig. A thin sock with grip on the sole stops your foot sliding on the pedal face, which matters most on a load cell brake where you are pushing hard against a pedal that barely moves.

Do I need gloves for sim racing?

No, and plenty of quick drivers never wear them. They earn their place if you run long stints, if your hands sweat, or if your wheel has a suede or Alcantara rim you would rather not have to recondition.

Will they fit my steering wheel?

Gloves are not wheel-specific. They work on leather, suede and Alcantara rims alike, and the grip pattern matters more on the softer materials.

What size should I order?

Measure across your palm at the knuckles and pick the size that matches, and if you are between sizes go down rather than up. A glove that shifts on the rim is worse than one that is slightly firm.

Do gloves protect the wheel as well as the hand?

That is a large part of why people buy them. Skin oils are what age a suede rim, and a glove is a great deal cheaper to replace than the wheel it is protecting.

Can I wash them?

Follow the instructions on the product page rather than a general rule, because the silicone grip pattern is the part that suffers from hot washes.
