Sim Racing Wheel or Wheelbase?

A sim racing wheel is the rim and its controls. It mounts to a wheelbase, which is the motor unit that produces force feedback and steering resistance. On most setups the two are bought separately.

That split decides what you shop for. The rim sets your grip shape, control layout and the cars it suits. The base sets how the wheel feels. If it is the motor side you are after, that is covered in Direct Drive Wheelbases.

Rim Shapes and What Each One Suits

Formula rims are flat across the top and bottom with a dense control layout, built for open wheelers and any car you drive from a fixed hand position. GT rims keep a round upper arc with a flat bottom, which works for GT, touring and road cars where your hands still move on the rim.

Round rims suit rally, drift and classic cars, where hand over hand steering matters more than a packed button layout. Truck rims are larger and plainer for long hauls, and sit in Truck Sim Wheels.

Quick Releases, Hubs and Getting a Rim to Fit

A rim does not bolt straight to a wheelbase. A hub or quick release sits between the two, carrying the electrical connection and letting you swap rims without tools. Each brand runs its own mounting pattern, so check what your base takes before you order.

Adapters and couplings are in Quick Releases. Some rims include a hub and others expect you to supply one, which is stated on each product page.

Button Plates, Dashes and Wheel Add-Ons

A button plate adds rotaries, toggles and switches to a rim or hub. That is how pit limiter, brake bias and traction control end up under your thumbs instead of on a keyboard.

A dash display puts gear, revs, lap delta and warning lights in your line of sight. Both are add-ons, so you can start with a plain rim and build the controls up as you need them.

Matching a Rim to Your Platform

Console support is decided by the wheelbase, not the rim, so start with the base. PlayStation Steering Wheels and Xbox Steering Wheels list the setups licensed for each console.

On PC the rim follows the brand you already run. MOZA Steering Wheels, Logitech Sim Racing, Thrustmaster Sim Racing and Pokornyi Engineering each use their own mount, so stay inside your ecosystem or budget for an adapter.

Building the Rest of Your Setup

Our Take

Most people upgrading a wheel are really asking about the base. The rim changes how a car feels in your hands and whether the controls fall where you want them, but it will not add strength to the feedback. That is the wheelbase doing the work.

Where a rim genuinely earns its money is comfort over a long stint and having the adjustments you actually use within reach. If you are early in a build, put the money into the base and the pedals first, then buy the rim you want to hold.

What is the difference between a sim racing wheel and a wheelbase?

The wheel is the rim you hold, with the paddles, buttons and dials. The wheelbase is the motor unit behind it that generates force feedback. The rim mounts to the base.

Can I use any rim with any wheelbase?

Not always. Mounting patterns and connectors differ between brands. Staying within one brand is the simple path, and an adapter covers most of the rest.

Do I need a quick release?

Only if you plan to swap rims. If you run one rim permanently, a fixed hub is enough.

Which rim shape should I choose?

Formula for open wheelers, GT for touring and road cars, round for rally, drift and classics, and a truck rim for long haul driving.

Will a sim racing wheel work on PlayStation or Xbox?

Console support comes from the wheelbase, not the rim. Check that the base is licensed for your console, then choose a rim that fits it.

What does a button plate do?

It adds rotaries, switches and toggles so in-car adjustments like brake bias and traction control are on the wheel rather than the keyboard.

Do rims come with a hub included?

Some do and some do not. Each product page states whether a hub is in the box.
