Quick Releases

A sim racing quick release lets you pull one wheel off and lock the next one on without tools, so a GT rim and a formula rim can share the same base. Gamer Gear Direct stocks quick release adapters in Australia for MOZA, Logitech, Thrustmaster and Simucube setups.

Which quick release fits your base

This is the only question that really matters, and the answer is almost always the brand you already own. Quick releases are not a universal standard: each wheelbase maker uses its own pattern, so the adapter has to match the base at one end and the wheel at the other. The MOZA Quick Release Adapter is for MOZA bases, the Logitech RS QR Adapter for the Logitech RS range, and Simucube offers both a Link quick release and a wheel-side kit for its own bases.

Thrustmaster splits two ways. The Quick Release Upgrade Adapter brings quick release to a base that did not ship with one, while the Dual Quick Release Adapter is made specifically for the T818 direct drive base. If you are not certain which end of the pairing you are missing, the wheel side and the base side are sold separately on some systems, so check both before you order.

What it changes, and what it does not

What you gain is seconds instead of minutes, and a reason to actually own a second rim. Swapping a wheel bolt by bolt is enough of a chore that most people stop doing it and just drive everything on one rim. A quick release removes that friction, which matters most if you move between GT, formula and rally in the same week. On a direct drive wheelbase it also has to hold up under real torque without introducing play, which is why the metal ones cost what they do.

What it does not do is make the wheel feel different. A good quick release is one you stop noticing. Worth saying plainly too: these are sim racing adapters for sim racing wheels and bases, not the hub and boss kits used in real cars. The two look similar in photos and are not interchangeable.

Quick release FAQs

What is a quick release in sim racing?

A two-part adapter. One half mounts to your wheelbase, the other to the back of the wheel, and they lock together so you can change rims by hand in a few seconds.

Are quick releases universal?

No. Each wheelbase brand uses its own pattern, so you need the adapter made for the base you own. Match the base first, then check the wheel side.

Do I need both a base side and a wheel side?

On some systems yes, they are sold as separate parts. On others the adapter is a single unit. Check what a given product includes before you order, and call us if it is not clear.

Will a quick release add play or flex?

A well-made one should not. The metal units are built to stay rigid under direct drive torque, which is the whole reason they are machined rather than moulded.

Can I use a car steering wheel quick release on a sim rig?

No. Automotive hub and boss kits use different patterns and are not designed for a wheelbase. Everything in this collection is made for sim racing hardware.
