What HOTAS Means

HOTAS stands for hands on throttle and stick. Every control you need in flight sits on the two units you are already holding, so you can change trim, radios, weapons or views without reaching for a keyboard.

It suits combat and space simulation most of all, where you are busy with both hands. For airliners and general aviation, a yoke and throttle quadrant is usually the closer match, and those sit in Yokes and Flight Sim Throttles.

One Kit or Two Separate Units

A matched HOTAS kit gives you a stick and throttle designed together, with one connection and one set of software. It is the simplest way in and the easiest to mount on a desk.

Buying separately lets you pick a stick you like and pair it with a throttle that suits the aircraft you fly. Sticks on their own are in Joysticks, and any throttle unit we stock will sit alongside one.

PC and Xbox

Console support is decided by the unit itself, not by an adapter, so read the listing before you buy. A few sets ship as two separate models, one per platform, with the same name on the box.

Mounting a HOTAS Setup

A stick pushed hard over will slide unless it is held. Rubber feet and a clamp are enough on a desk, and a cockpit with side mounts is the answer once you are flying regularly.

Adding Pedals Later

A HOTAS set covers pitch, roll and thrust. Rudder pedals add yaw and wheel braking, which matters on the ground, in a crosswind and in any aircraft you land yourself.

Pedal sets are in Rudder Pedals. Most HOTAS setups take them as a separate USB device with no extra hardware.

What does HOTAS stand for?

Hands on throttle and stick. The idea is that the controls you use in flight are on the stick and throttle themselves, so your hands never leave them.

Do I need a HOTAS for Microsoft Flight Simulator?

No. A yoke suits most airliners and light aircraft in it. A HOTAS makes more sense for fighters, aerobatics and anything you fly with a centre stick.

Will a HOTAS work on Xbox?

Only if that specific unit is licensed for Xbox. Check the product page, and note that some models are sold in separate PC and Xbox versions.

Can I use the stick without the throttle?

Yes. They are separate devices and games treat them that way, so you can start with one and add the other later.

Does a HOTAS need a cockpit?

Not to start. A desk with a clamp or rubber feet is enough. A cockpit with side mounts helps once you are flying often, because nothing shifts under load.

Do I still need rudder pedals?

You can twist most sticks for rudder input. Pedals give you finer yaw control and separate toe brakes, which is what settles the aircraft in a crosswind and keeps it tracking straight on rollout.
