Description

Trak Racer TR160 V5 Racing Simulator Cockpit

The TR160 V5 is the heaviest, stiffest extruded cockpit Trak Racer build, on 160 by 40mm double-walled aluminium profile. It is the frame you buy when the wheelbase is not the limiting factor and you would rather it never became one.

It shares the top torque tier with the TR120S V2 at 0 to 30Nm and above, and the same direct-fit motion path with no separate motion base. What it adds is mass, section and two things the rest of the range does not offer.

Those two: a genuine colour choice, anodised black or painted high-gloss white, and the Gen 2 shifter mount included as standard rather than sold as an extra. It sits at the top of the extrusion side of the racing simulator cockpits.

Trak Racer TR160 V5 racing simulator cockpit shown complete

Key features

  • 160 x 40mm double-walled aluminium T-slot extruded profile
  • Rated for wheelbases from 0 to 30Nm and above
  • Takes motion direct-fit with no separate motion base
  • Gen 2 shifter mount and side chassis support included
  • Choice of anodised black or high-gloss white
  • Premium seat slider rails and adjustment bar included
  • Supports quad monitor stands and triples up to 45 inches
  • Weighs 41kg, the heaviest extruded frame in the range

Section size is the whole argument

The range steps up in profile: 40mm on the TR40S, 80 by 40mm on the TR80S, 120 by 40mm on the TR120S, and 160 by 40mm double-walled here. Each step buys stiffness, and stiffness is what stops a strong wheelbase twisting the frame it is bolted to.

At 41kg the TR160 V5 is the heaviest extruded rig Trak Racer make, and mass in a cockpit is not a penalty. It is inertia working for you, keeping the wheel deck where you put it while the wheelbase argues with your hands.

The torque rating is the same 0 to 30Nm and above as the TR120S V2. What the extra section buys is margin rather than headline capability.

Two things nothing else in the range has

First, colour. The TR160 V5 comes in anodised black or painted high-gloss white, with matching 90 degree brackets and laser-cut carbon steel plates. Every other rig in the range is black only, and in a room where the cockpit is furniture as much as equipment, that is a real choice.

Second, the shifter mount. Trak Racer include the Gen 2 universal shifter mount, the oversized shifter support and the side chassis support plate as standard here. On the TR120S V2 and TR80S those are optional extras.

Premium seat slider rails and the adjustment bar are included too, so a good deal of what you would otherwise add is already in the box.

Pedal mount and driving position

As on the TR120S V2, you select the pedal mount: a pre-drilled plate, an aluminium profile mount with heel plate, or the strengthened hybrid plate.

The hybrid plate converts between formula, GT and inverted pedal positions, at around 30 minutes per changeover. It is an upgrade rather than standard equipment, which is the one area where the TR80S undercuts this rig on value.

All three options carry the fine-tune slide function and high or low positioning.

Size, screens and where it sits

Assembled it occupies 660 by 1445mm and weighs 41kg, the same footprint as the TR120S V2 in a heavier frame. It supports triples up to 45 inches and quad monitor configurations. The stands themselves are in the sim racing monitor stands.

Against the tube-frame rigs, the comparison is straightforward. The TR8 Pro V2 is lighter, faster to build and rated to 25Nm. The Racing TRX V2 is heavier again and converts between formula and GT in minutes rather than half an hour.

Choose the TR160 V5 when you want the largest section and heaviest extruded frame in the range, the shifter mount in the box, and the option of a rig that is not black.

Our expert take

"This is the frame for someone who has stopped upgrading wheelbases and wants the cockpit to be permanent. One hundred and sixty by forty double-walled is more section than most people need, which is precisely why it never becomes the weak link."

"The white finish gets dismissed as cosmetic and it is the reason a good number of these end up in living rooms rather than garages. If the rig has to share a room with the rest of your life, having a choice other than black matters more than the spec sheet suggests."

Frequently asked questions

What wheelbase torque does it handle?

0 to 30Nm and above, the same top tier as the TR120S V2, on a heavier 160 x 40mm double-walled profile.

What colours does it come in?

Anodised black or painted high-gloss white. It is the only cockpit in the Trak Racer range offered in a colour other than black.

Is the shifter mount included?

Yes. The Gen 2 universal shifter mount, oversized shifter support and side chassis support plate are standard on the TR160 V5, where the TR120S V2 and TR80S sell them separately.

Does it need a motion base?

No. Like the TR120S V2 it takes motion direct-fit. The TR40S, TR80S, TR8 Pro and TRX all require a base such as the Trak Racer TR Move platform, which runs D-BOX actuators.

Is the formula and GT hybrid plate included?

No, it is a paid pedal mount upgrade with around a 30 minute changeover. The TR80S includes the hybrid plate as standard.
