However, with so many launch monitors on the market, it's easy to get overwhelmed all the options out there. At Gamer Gear Direct, we offer what are widely considered the two best golf launch monitors - SkyTrak and Flightscope Mevo+. These are easily the two most popular launch monitors on the market today. While both offer great value, there are key differences between these two launch monitors you should know in order to ensure you purchase the right golf launch monitor for your specific situation.

Below, we’ll explain the benefits, features and differences between each unit to help you decide which launch monitor is best for you. First, let's discuss the technology embedded into each golf launch monitor, so you can get a handle on how portable launch monitor measures data parameters to help you improve your swing and your broader golf game.

Launch monitor technology

When considering a launch monitor for your golf simulator, you should be aware of the technology launch monitors use to measure data. There are distinct characteristics between launch monitor technology that can make one model suitable for one keen golfer but potentially unsuitable for another. But to keep things simple there are essentially two main types of launch monitors - photometric and doppler radar. Although both analyse similar ball and club data parameters, they way in which these data parameters are captured and evaluated is different. Below, we'll explain how each of these launch monitors work.

How does a photometric launch monitor work?

Photometric golf launch monitors (like SkyTrak) use high-speed cameras to snap images of the golf ball and club before, during, and after impact with your club. The photometric system analyses these image and measurements are compiled relating to the spin, speed, and direction of the golf ball. Other data parameters - like carry distance - are modelled using internal algorithms.

SkyTrak data

Photometric launch monitors must have a perfect view of the golf ball and hitting area otherwise the shot may not register correctly. The ball must also clearly contrast the colour of the hitting area so that the camera-based launch monitor can get a clear shot of the golf ball. Generally speaking, photometric launch monitors are more effective for indoor use than outdoors as the environment can affect the accuracy of the camera system.

How does a doppler radar launch monitor work?

Doppler radar launch monitors generate a microwave signal that radiates from the device. When a golf ball enters the radar signal, the unit detects the reflected signal.

Doppler radar launch monitor example of how doppler radar technology works

Doppler radar launch monitors like the Flightscope Mevo+ then analyse the information from this signal to precisely calculate ball speed, spin and other core ball flight data. Doppler radar launch monitors only calculate ball flight data and use internal algorithms to project club head movement.

OK. So, now that you have a handle on how the two core launch monitor technologies work, let's deep dive into the specifics of each of the leading golf launch monitors we stock and sell here at Gamer Gear Direct.

Best golf launch monitors 2023: SkyTrak

The SkyTrak golf launch monitor is hands down one of the most popular and accurate launch monitors available to everyday golfers. Multiple head to head reviews have shown just how accurate the SkyTrak is when compared to far more expensive units including high-end commercial golf simulator set-ups. The SkyTrak is packing technology that just a few short years would have cost your upwards of $20,000, if not more, all in a package that starts at just over $3,000.

 SkyTrak portable launch monitor

The SkyTrak is compatible with most golf simulation software including The Golf Club 2019 and E6. This feature alone makes the SkyTrak a favourite for at-home or commercial golf simulator set-ups.

But if it's just golf practice and golf training features you want then the SkyTrak delivers here, too. With the Game Improvement Plan subscription there are a number of fun challenges and skill tests designed to improve your golf game, including:

  • Longest drive contest
  • Closest to the pin
  • Target practice
  • Skills assessment
  • Bag mapping

And that's just the beginning! There are additional custom settings you can play around with like change the practice range turf conditions from normal to soft or firm. You can also adjust environmental factors such as humidity and wind conditions to learn the effects of different conditions on your distances for better club selection and lower scores.

Then there's:

  • 5 camera views - adds more camera views to include: first person, dynamic, downrange, follow the ball or 45 degree overhead view.
  • Session history - stores shot data to analyse your performance and improvement over an entire session in a shot history table and graphically render a side and top view of shots, average distance with each club, and more.

Progress tracking, charts and graphs - you can track your progress via the SkyGolf 360 mobile app. Chart your stats by club by shot and see average carry distances, learn your maximum distance and create a bag map for better club selection during play.

SkyTrak practice

You can purchase the standalone SkyTrak launch monitor or, we also offer a SkyTrak bundle pack that includes a free 12 month subscription to the Game Improvement Plan and a genuine SkyTrak protective steel case.

How accurate is the SkyTrak?

The SkyTrak is a photometric launch monitor, meaning it uses a series of high speed cameras to snap pictures of your golf ball as it is hit by the club. The photometric system only needs to record and measure the first few centimetres of ball flight path to accurately and near-instantly predict trajectory, distance, target accuracy and other key parameters.

The SkyTrak only requires a small area to track ball movement, you really only need enough room to swing your club to use the SkyTrak. This makes the SkyTrak perfect for small training areas or golf simulator rooms. Compare that to the Flightscope Mevo+ where you'll need a room depth of at least five metres and the SkyTrak is easily the best launch monitor for smaller spaces.

SkyTrak golf simulator set-up

The world's top, independent golf testing company - Golf Laboratories - has run the SkyTrak through its paces at its state-of-the-art testing facility. This testing regime utilized multiple types of ball speeds, club sizes, and shot types, with the end results almost identical to the top professional launch monitors in comparison to the five most important criteria of ball speed, launch angle, backspin, sidespin, and carry distance.

Why data parameters does the SkyTrak measure?

SkyTrak’s primary motivation is to help improve your golf game. golfersexperience that not only provides important data for improving golf skills but also one that offers a certain level of amusement. A lot of other systems provide an overwhelming amount of data that can confuse users. Plus, not all of that data is meaningful and useful. SkyTrak narrowed down the information so that any data provided is useful in improving your golfing.

SkyTrak golf simulator data point analysis

Now you won’t have to worry about being overwhelmed when trying to better your games. Regardless, the data pulled is needed in order to create a reliable flight model so actual distance and the shape of each golf shot can be viewed both while practicing and during a game.

Skytrak directly measures ball speed, back spin, launch angle, side spin and side angle. These parameters are modelled to calculate accurate approximations of further data including carry, roll and total distance, clubhead speed and angle of descent. Skytrak then renders the flight path in 3D.

Below are the five most important data parameters the SkyTrak measures and a description of each.

Ball speed

Ball speed is the highest priority for criteria. This directly impacts the total distance the ball will travel. A few things can alter ball speed, including the speed at which the clubhead hits the ball, the angle of the clubhead, and the bounce that occurs when the clubhead hits the golf ball. Typically, the more speed that is used to hit the golf ball, the further the golf ball will travel.

Ball data including ball speed

Launch angle

Launch angle is the angle that occurs when the ball is taking off from the ground after impact from the head of the club. This will help determine the height that the ball reaches. The larger the launch angle, the taller the height that is achieved by the golf ball. There is an ideal angle to aim for that is in the middle, causing the ball to travel not too high and not too low.

Launch angle example

Spin axis

The spin axis (not surprisingly interconnected with back and side spin) represents an imaginary line through the centre of the golf ball; this can be either up and down or side to side. When the spin axis is neutral or zero, the golf ball travels in a straight line. When the spin axis is rotated to the left or right, the outcome is a bent trajectory to the left or the right. In order to keep the spin axis near zero, it is imperative that the clubhead impacts the golf ball in the same direction as the swing and at the same angle. This will ensure the ball travels in a straight line as much as possible.

Spin axis example

Side spin

Sidespin is how the ball moves horizontally in relation to the ground right after it has been hit by the clubhead. This is what assists with the exact type of shot you are looking to create. You can use this for such shots as draws, fades, and slices. A lower side spin provides a straighter flight pattern. SkyTrak utilizes formulas that single outside spin from the spin axis. This creates the ability to see why exactly a shot might be curving in a specific direction. A higher number provided for side spin indicates a larger curve. If the number is positive, the golf ball path bends to the right. If the number is negative, the golf ball flight path bends to the left.

Back spin

Backspin is an important element most commonly utilized in outdoor settings. This is how the ball moves vertically in relation to the ground right after impact from the club. This helps counteract wind that may cause the ball's flight path to change the height. This can be used indoors as well. The main effect of backspin is to manipulate the height of the trajectory. More backspin means the golf ball will travel higher.

Back spin, side spin and side angle data example

Side angle

The final core parameter measured is side angle. This is the angle that the ball travels left or right of an imaginary line from you to the intended target. If the side angle is too different than the target line, the ball is aimed further away from the mark. If you target a lower side angle coupled with a smaller amount of sidespin, you’ll be more likely to hit the ball in a straight trajectory towards the mark.

Having this data allows you to compare and contrast your different swings. When you have a particular good swing, then you can see exactly what made it a good one. On the other hand, if you have a bad swing, then you can see what you need to improve in order to improve.

Without data, you have to rely on your own intuition, as well as others who critique your performance. While both of those can be helpful, they also can be extremely subjective. One instructor may have one opinion, while another may have the opposite opinion.

Data is inherently objective and can therefore give you rational information you can use to improve quickly.

Launch monitor head-to-head: SkyTrak vs. Flightscope Mevo+

SkyTrak vs. Flightscope Mevo+ launch monitors buyers guide

As mentioned previously, a huge difference between these two golf launch monitors is the kinds of technology they use. SkyTrak launch monitor uses photometric camera technology, while the Mevo+ golf launch monitor uses Doppler radar technology. The actual data each tracks only differs slightly.

For example, the SkyTrak golf launch monitor will be able to track the angle of descent, which is something the Mevo+ launch monitor doesn’t do. On the other hand, Mevo+ also offers the attack angle, in addition to every data point they share.

In terms of indoor versus outdoor performance, this is where there’s a clear difference between the two brands. The SkyTrak does significantly better indoors than the Mevo+ does due to its small size. Alternatively, Mevo+ excels at outdoor play which is something SkyTrak is not known for.

The SkyTrak tends to lose sight of the ball and can be more finicky in terms of accuracy when it comes to outdoor play. On that same note, there is a difference in size. The SkyTrak is significantly smaller than the Mevo+ and only utilizes a few feet.

Let’s look at how these two brands differ in features! Mevo+ has a big advantage when it comes to how many practice ranges it offers in comparison to SkyTrak - 17 to 1. SkyTrak offers virtual competitions, which is something Mevo+ doesn’t do.

Mevo+ does have a longer list of features that SkyTrak DOESN’T have, including video analysis and out-of-box simulation. However, something that should be mentioned is that Mevo+ doesn’t seem to be a good fit for putting.

Which launch monitor is right for you?

While both launch monitors do great work, one may make more sense for you than another. If you think you’ll be doing the bulk of your practice indoors, then we suggest going for the SkyTrak portable launch monitor. If you think you’ll do the majority of your practice outdoors, stick with the Mevo+.

On the other hand, if your putting is what you really want to work on, then using the SkyTrak will help you gain confidence quickly, while the Mevo+ won’t.

In the end, you can’t go wrong with either, but where you spend the most of your time practicing will determine which one is better suited for you.

How difficult is it to set up a Mevo+ or SkyTrak monitor?

Setting up either launch monitor is relatively easy and should only take a few minutes.

For the Mevo+ launch monitor:

Download the FS Golf app.

Easy Method:

First, make sure your Wi-Fi is on your phone. Next, switch on your Mevo launch monitor by holding the button down until the unit beeps. Launch the corresponding FS Golf app. When you’re in the app, find the QR code on the back of the monitor and scan it. On the back of the monitor, there is an indicator that will show when you’ve successfully been connected.

Manual method:

Make sure your phone’s Wi-Fi is turned on. Next, press the on/off button on the unit, and wait until the system and battery lights will come on. Check that the connection light turns a solid blue. This will let you know that the unit is ready for connection.

On your phone, go to your Wi-Fi settings and choose the correct unit with the serial number. The Wi-Fi password is your serial number, for example, M2-123456. You’ll know you’re connected when the connection light turns solid green. Launch the app on your phone and proceed. Open the Kickstand before placing.

For the SkyTrak monitor

Download the free SkyTrak app, and connect via the Wi-Fi hotspot. To do this, follow the same steps as with the Mevo+ monitor. Once connected, you can start hitting shots on the SkyTrak 3D Practice Range.

How much space do I need in order to set up my launch monitor?

The exact amount of space needed differs depending on if you’re playing indoors or outdoors. Indoors you will need about 8’ from the sensor to the tee and about 13’ to the net. If playing outdoors, you’ll ideally have 7-8’ from the sensor to the tee and unrestricted ball flight.

There’s also something called short indoor play. For that, you must have 8’ from the sensor to the tee and 8’ to the net.

How much battery life does a launch monitor have?

The SkyTrak launch monitor has about 5 hours of continued use available in its battery. Mevo+ on the other hand allows for 2 hours on a fully charged battery or 1.5 hours in simulator play. If you like to play longer, then Mevo+ may not be the best choice for you.

What data parameters are available for the Mevo+ versus the SkyTrak?

Both brands give broadband data points to help someone improve their golf swing. The main difference between these two is that SkyTrak will also give you the angle of descent, and Mevo+ also offers speed angle.

What kind of technology do the Mevo and the SkyTrak use?

Mevo+ uses Doppler radar technology, while Mevo+ uses photometric technology.

How much do the Mevo and the SkyTrak cost?

Mevo+ and SkyTrak both have bundles that Gamer Gear Direct sells and cost $3,595. The bundles include:

  • 12-month subscription to improvement software
  • Protective metal case
  • Launch monitor

At Gamer Gear Direct, we also offer that someone can purchase just the Sky Trak launch monitor on its own.

How can a launch monitor help me improve my game?

The launch monitor gives enough information and data that if you utilize one or more data points you’ll be able to improve that metric. It’s hard to improve something when you don’t know what to improve. The launch monitors help solve that problem.
