Description

MOZA SGP shifter and HBP handbrake combo

The MOZA SGP sequential shifter and HBP handbrake are the two inputs that turn a wheel and pedals into a full car. The SGP gives you one lever you push and pull through the gears. The HBP gives you a lever you can pull part way.

A sequential shifter moves in one plane: one gear per movement, in order, with no gate to find. That is what rally cars, touring cars and most modern race cars use. The handbrake is the opposite kind of input, reading travel through a 16-bit non-contact sensor so a light trail and a full lock are two different things rather than the same button press.

Both are built from aluminium, both connect by USB straight to a Windows PC or over RJ11 to a compatible MOZA wheelbase, and both are configured in MOZA Pit House alongside the rest of your MOZA gear.

The pairing suits rally and drift above all, where you are working the lever and the handbrake constantly.

MOZA SGP + HBP bundle key features

What the pairing gives you

  • Sequential shift: one lever movement per gear, with no gate to find
  • Non-contact Hall sensor on the shifter, so nothing rubs or wears
  • Handbrake lever travel read by a 16-bit non-contact angle sensor
  • Aerospace-grade aluminium alloy and high-strength steel shifter housing
  • Adjustable damper to set how heavy the shifter pull feels
  • Handbrake resistance set mechanically by swapping the supplied springs
  • Two mechanical buttons on the shifter, in a choice of eight colours
  • Lever height adjusts up to 64 mm, knob thread is M12 x 1.5
  • USB direct to a Windows PC, or RJ11 to a compatible MOZA wheelbase
  • 12-month manufacturer warranty with Australian support

Aluminium and steel construction

MOZA builds the SGP housing from aerospace-grade aluminium alloy and high-strength steel, with the lever and knob in aluminium alloy. The HBP handbrake body is CNC machined aerospace-grade aluminium and anodised.

A sequential lever takes its load sideways rather than straight down, which is the direction a plastic housing gives way in. Steel in the housing is the reason the throw feels the same at the end of a long stint as it did at the start.

The knob screws on with an M12 x 1.5 thread, which is the industry standard, so most aftermarket knobs fit if you want a different weight or shape in your hand.

MOZA SGP shifter & HBP handbrake

How the lever and the handbrake feel

The SGP moves in one plane: forward for one gear, back for the next. There is no gate to locate, so you can change gear without taking your eyes off the road, which is why rally and touring cars use the layout.

An adjustable damper sets how heavy that movement is. Wound light the lever is quick and flickable. Wound heavier it gives a definite end to each pull rather than a loose throw, which is what most people want once they have driven with it for a week.

The HBP has no detents at all, just travel, and its resistance is set by swapping the supplied springs. Both are worth setting up the day they arrive, because the defaults will not match how you drive.

Mounting the shifter and handbrake

The SGP mounts in a forward or a reversed orientation, so the lever can go where it falls to hand rather than where the rig happens to have a free face. Its height adjusts through a range of up to 64 mm.

The HBP bolts through an M6 pattern to aluminium profile rigs, which covers most sim racing cockpits and wheel stands, and it can be side mounted if you would rather have the lever beside the seat than in front of it.

On a desk neither unit has a bolt pattern to use, so MOZA sells a Universal Mounting Plate separately for each. Neither is designed to be clamped to a desktop without one.

PC or wheelbase connection

There are two ways to connect each unit. USB straight to a Windows PC treats it as its own device, which works regardless of what wheel base you run. RJ11 into a compatible MOZA wheelbase routes it through the base instead, so it arrives in MOZA Pit House alongside your other MOZA gear.

Running both over USB is always available, so you are never limited by how many accessory ports your particular wheel base has.

The SGP shifter also works on Xbox through the MOZA R3 wheelbase. The HBP handbrake is a PC device. Configuration, calibration and button mapping are all done in Pit House.

Our take

“The real question here is not which bundle, it is sequential or H-pattern, and the honest answer is whatever your cars actually use. If you live in rally and modern tin-tops, this is the right lever and you will never miss having a gate. If you spend your time in road cars and classics, buy the H-pattern instead and do not let the tidier look of a sequential talk you into the wrong one. The handbrake is the easy part of the decision: anyone driving loose surfaces should have one.”

Frequently asked questions

What makes the MOZA SGP shifter and HBP handbrake bundle worth buying together?

It pairs a sequential lever with a progressive handbrake, which are the two inputs a paddle-shift wheel cannot give you. The shifter uses a non-contact Hall sensor and an adjustable damper, the handbrake reads lever travel through a 16-bit non-contact sensor, and both are configured in MOZA Pit House.

What is the difference between a sequential shifter and an H-pattern?

A sequential lever moves in one plane: forward for one gear, back for the next, in order. An H-pattern has a separate gate for each gear and lets you skip between them. Rally cars, touring cars and most modern race cars are sequential, while road cars and classic racing cars are H-pattern. MOZA’s HGP is the H-pattern option if that is what you drive.

Can I adjust how the shifter and handbrake feel?

Yes, and both adjustments are mechanical. The SGP has a damper that sets how heavy the pull is, and its lever height adjusts through a range of up to 64 mm. The handbrake’s resistance is set by swapping the supplied springs, and its stop position sets how far the lever travels. Button mapping and calibration are done in MOZA Pit House.

What sensors do the shifter and handbrake use?

The SGP uses a non-contact Hall sensor and the HBP a 16-bit non-contact angle sensor. Non-contact means nothing rubs, so there is no wiper to wear out or drift over time. MOZA does not publish a resolution figure for the SGP sensor, so we will not quote one.

How well do the shifter and handbrake hold up?

The SGP housing is aerospace-grade aluminium alloy with high-strength steel, and the HBP body is CNC machined aerospace-grade aluminium and anodised. Both sensors are non-contact, so they have no wearing surface. The parts that do wear on the handbrake are the springs and the damper, and both are user-replaceable.

How do I mount the SGP shifter and HBP handbrake?

The SGP mounts in a forward or a reversed orientation. The HBP bolts through an M6 pattern to aluminium profile rigs and can also be side mounted. On a desk you need MOZA’s Universal Mounting Plate, which is sold separately for each unit.

What does the bundle connect to?

Each unit connects by USB straight to a Windows PC, or over RJ11 to a compatible MOZA wheelbase so it appears in Pit House with the rest of your MOZA gear. The SGP shifter also works on Xbox through the MOZA R3 wheelbase. The HBP handbrake is a PC device and is not compatible with PlayStation or Xbox.

Can I fit a different shifter knob?

The SGP knob uses an M12 x 1.5 thread, which is the industry standard, so most aftermarket knobs fit. Changing the knob is the cheapest way to change how the lever feels in your hand.

What are the buttons on the SGP shifter for?

There are two mechanical buttons on the shifter and they light in a choice of eight colours. They are mapped in MOZA Pit House, so you can put whatever you reach for most often on them rather than hunting for it on the wheel.

What warranty covers the shifter and handbrake?

Twelve months against manufacturer defects on each unit, supported by Gamer Gear Direct’s Australian team. MOZA wheel bases carry 24 months; steering wheels, pedals, shifters and handbrakes carry 12.
