Thrustmaster

Thrustmaster makes gear for both halves of simulation, and Gamer Gear Direct carries the range in Australia: direct drive bases, rims and pedals for racing, and yokes, flight sticks, throttles and rudder pedals for flying. One brand, two very different cockpits.

The racing side

Two bases anchor it. The T598 Direct Drive Bundle arrives as base, wheel and pedals together and runs on PlayStation, Xbox and PC, which is rare for direct drive. The T818 Servo Base Black Edition is the stronger PC option, and also comes as the Ferrari 488 GT3 Wheel Pack with a licensed replica rim.

Rims come off through a quick release, so one base carries several. The Ferrari SF-25 Edition Formula Wheel is the open wheel option, the EVO Racing 32R Leather Wheel the round GT rim, and the Hypercar Premium Wheel Rim Add-On sits between them. RaceLine Pedals III cover the pedal end, with an LC version and an upgrade kit if you want a load cell brake, and the TH8A and TH8S shifters and the TSS Handbrake fill in the rest. The wider direct drive wheelbases range shows how they compare.

The flight side

This is now the larger half of the range, and it splits by aircraft. The TCA Airbus line gives you the sidestick, the quadrant and the Officer and Captain packs that bundle them, matching an Airbus cockpit where the stick sits beside you. The TCA Boeing line does the same for a yoke cockpit, with the yoke, the quadrant and the Yoke Pack.

For military and space, the HOTAS Warthog pairs a metal stick and throttle modelled on the A-10C. The Sol-R family runs from the Sol-R 1 Flightstick up through the Sol-R 4 HOTAS and Sol-R 6 Throttle, with the Sol-R 2 HOSAS Space Sim Duo giving you two sticks instead of a stick and a throttle. The T.16000M FCS range is the affordable way in, as a stick, a HOTAS, a flight pack or a space sim duo. Rudder comes from the TPR Pendular Rudder or the lighter TFRP set, and more sits in flight simulator controls.

Bases, grips and building up over time

Thrustmaster treats flight gear as modular in the same way it treats rims. The AVA Base takes interchangeable grips, and the AVA F/A-18 Super Hornet Flight Stick is that base with the Hornet grip fitted. The HOTAS Magnetic Base and the F/A-18C Hornet Add-On Grip do the same job for an existing Warthog or Cougar, and the Sol-R 3 AVA Add-On Grip crosses between the two families.

It means the expensive part, the base, outlives the grip on top of it. Swap the grip when you change aircraft rather than buying another stick. The TM Flying Clamp handles mounting when you do not have a frame, and the flight simulator cockpits range covers it when you do.

Check the platform before anything else

This is the one thing that cannot be adapted later, and Thrustmaster is not consistent about it across the range, so it is worth saying plainly. On the racing side the T598 bundle, the TSS Handbrake and the Hypercar rim run on PlayStation, Xbox and PC, while the T818 and the packs built on it are PC only.

On the flight side the pattern is different again. The Boeing yoke and quadrant and the Airbus Sidestick X and Captain Pack X are the Xbox capable ones. The standard Airbus Sidestick and Quadrant, the Officer Pack, the whole Sol-R and T.16000M range, the Warthog, the AVA gear and both rudder sets are PC only. The product page states it for each one, and if you are unsure, ring us before you order rather than after.

The SimTask range, for farming and working vehicles

Thrustmaster also builds for simulators that are neither racing nor flying. The SimTask FarmStick is a control stick for farming and construction sims, in PC, PlayStation and Xbox versions, and the SimTask Steering Kit and T128-P SimTask Pack add a wheel to the same setup.

If that is the sim you spend your time in, these are purpose built for it rather than a racing wheel pressed into service. The farming simulators range has the rest.

Our take

Thrustmaster is one of the few brands that builds seriously for racing and for flight at the same time, and it does it with real range underneath. You can start on an entry flight stick and end up on a metal HOTAS without leaving the brand, or run a console wheel now and a direct drive base later on the same rims. The quality climbs with the range rather than staying flat: the gear at the top is metal where it matters, modular where it helps, and built to be kept. The honest caveat is that Thrustmaster's range is wide enough to be confusing, and the platform support varies more than it should, so it is worth a phone call before you commit to a direction.

Thrustmaster FAQs

Does Thrustmaster gear work on PlayStation and Xbox?

Some of it. On racing, the T598 bundle and several accessories cover PlayStation, Xbox and PC, while the T818 is PC only. On flight, the Boeing yoke and quadrant and the Airbus X models cover Xbox, and the rest of the flight range is PC only. Check the product page, because it cannot be adapted afterwards.

Can I swap grips between Thrustmaster flight sticks?

Often, yes. The AVA Base, the HOTAS Magnetic Base and the Warthog and Cougar bases take add-on grips, so you can change the stick without replacing the base. Tell us what you own and we will confirm the fit.

What is the difference between the TCA Airbus and Boeing lines?

The cockpit they copy. Airbus uses a sidestick beside the pilot, so that line is built around a sidestick and quadrant. Boeing uses a yoke in front, so that line is built around a yoke.

Which T.16000M should I buy?

The Flight Stick on its own if you already have a throttle, the FCS HOTAS for a stick and throttle together, the Flight Pack to add rudder pedals, and the Space Sim Duo if you want two sticks for space sims rather than a stick and throttle.

Is Thrustmaster covered by warranty in Australia?

Yes. Gamer Gear Direct is an authorised Thrustmaster dealer, and Thrustmaster covers its products with a two year manufacturer warranty, with your rights under Australian Consumer Law on top of that.

Can I use Thrustmaster pedals with another brand's wheelbase?

Often, depending on how they connect and what inputs your base or PC offers. It is worth checking rather than assuming, and it is a quick question on the phone.

Buying Thrustmaster in Australia

Gamer Gear Direct is an authorised Thrustmaster dealer, so everything here is genuine, carries the two year manufacturer warranty and is supported locally rather than through an overseas returns process. Orders ship from our Adelaide warehouse and your rights under Australian Consumer Law are unaffected.

If you are weighing Thrustmaster against the other direct drive line we carry, that is MOZA Racing. Call the team on (03) 9961 0240, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, or come and try a rig at the Dandenong South showroom in Melbourne.
