Flight Sim Joysticks

A flight stick puts pitch and roll under one hand, with the buttons and hat switches you use most sitting under your thumb. Gamer Gear Direct stocks flight sim joysticks in Australia, from first sticks to force feedback bases, with local warranty support.

Centre Stick or Side Stick

A centre stick sits between your knees, the way it does in a warbird, an aerobatic aircraft or a fighter. It gives you the longest travel and the most precise small inputs, and it needs a place to sit that is not the desk.

A side stick mounts to the right or left, matching modern airliners and many light aircraft. It takes far less room and clamps to a desk edge, which is why it suits most home setups.

Spring Loaded or Force Feedback

A spring loaded stick centres itself with the same pull no matter what the aircraft is doing. It is simple, reliable and where most simmers start.

A force feedback base drives the stick with a motor instead, so the loading changes with airspeed and you can feel a stall buffet or a trim change through the grip. Bases and grips are sold separately, which lets you change the grip without replacing the base.

Grips, Hats and Switches

Count the controls you actually need before you count the ones on the box. Trim, views, flaps, gear and radios are the ones you reach for constantly, and having them on the grip is what keeps your hands in place.

If you want the throttle controls on a second unit rather than the stick, the matched sets are in HOTAS and standalone throttle units are in Flight Sim Throttles.

Which Sticks Run on Xbox

A stick works on console only where that exact model is licensed for it, and the family name is not a guarantee. Read the individual product page before ordering.

The console licensed sticks sit in Xbox Flight Controls. Everything else, force feedback bases included, is in Flight Simulator Controls.

Mounting a Stick

A desk clamp holds a side stick steady and costs very little. A centre stick needs either a floor mount or a cockpit with a centre bracket, because there is nowhere on a desk for it to live.

Clamps, brackets and mounts are in Flight Simulator Accessories. Frames built to take a centre stick are in Flight Simulator Cockpits.

Adding Rudder and a Yoke Later

A stick covers pitch and roll. Yaw and braking come from pedals, and those are in Rudder Pedals.

Plenty of simmers keep a stick for fighters and aerobatics and a yoke for airliners and general aviation. The yokes are in Yokes, and both can stay connected at once.

Our take

The range here runs from a solid first flight stick through to force feedback bases, and it is deep enough that you can match the grip, the mounting and the feel to the aircraft you actually fly rather than settling for whatever happens to fit. Quality in a stick shows up in the parts you never see: the gimbal, the sensor type, whether it still feels square once it is worn in. The honest caveat is that the gap in flying accuracy between a good entry stick and a high end one is narrower than the gap in price, so buy for how you fly rather than for the spec sheet.

Flight Stick FAQs

What is the difference between a joystick and a flight stick?

Nothing, in flight simulation. Both describe a stick that controls pitch and roll. Flight stick is simply the term most simmers use.

Do I need force feedback?

No, and most people start without it. It changes how much the aircraft tells you through the controls rather than how accurately you can fly, so it is an upgrade rather than a starting point.

Can I use a flight stick for Microsoft Flight Simulator?

Yes. It suits fighters, aerobatics and any aircraft flown with a centre stick. For airliners a yoke is usually the closer match to the real cockpit.

Will a flight stick work on Xbox?

Only if the model is licensed for it. Some sticks are sold in separate PC and Xbox versions, so check the listing before ordering.

Can I change the grip on my stick?

On a force feedback base, usually yes, since the grip and base are separate parts. On a spring loaded stick the grip is generally fixed.

Do I need a cockpit for a centre stick?

Something to mount it to, yes. A floor mount or a centre bracket in a frame both work. A side stick avoids the problem by clamping to a desk.

Buying a Flight Stick from Gamer Gear Direct

Gamer Gear Direct is an authorised dealer for MOZA Racing, Thrustmaster, Honeycomb Aeronautical, Turtle Beach and PXN, so every flight stick here is genuine, covered by its manufacturer warranty, and supported locally rather than through an overseas returns process. Sticks ship from our Adelaide warehouse, and your rights under Australian Consumer Law are unaffected.

You are welcome to hold one in our Dandenong South showroom in Melbourne before you commit, which is the fastest way to settle centre stick against side stick. Call us on (03) 9961 0240, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
