Description

Turtle Beach VelocityOne H.O.T.A.S. for Xbox

Console flight simulation has spent years asking pilots to fly serious aircraft on a gamepad. The VelocityOne H.O.T.A.S. is the answer to that. It is officially licensed for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, and it pairs the VelocityOne Flightstick II with the VelocityOne Dual Throttle so both hands land on real controls the moment you sit down.

The two units carry 73 programmable inputs and 15 axes between them. The main stick axes use next-generation 16-bit Hall-effect sensors resolving over 65,000 input counts each, and the throttle levers use 10-bit Hall-effect sensing. Because Hall-effect sensing is non-contact, the centring and calibration you get out of the box are the centring and calibration you still have after a few hundred hours.

On Xbox the throttle connects through the stick as a pass-through, so the whole system presents to the console as one licensed device and works without a driver install. It also runs on Windows 10 and 11, which means the same hardware follows you if you build a PC rig later. The VelocityOne Universal Sim Mount and the VelocityOne Rudder Pedals extend it from there.

Key features

  • Officially licensed for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One
  • 73 programmable inputs and 15 axes across the stick and throttle
  • 16-bit Hall-effect main stick axes with over 65,000 counts per axis
  • 10-bit Hall-effect throttle axes for smooth, repeatable thrust
  • Full colour Flight Management Display built into the stick

  • Interchangeable detent cartridges for afterburner, idle and reverse
  • Adjustable throttle tension to suit fighters or heavy aircraft
  • Three-position spring tension on the stick
  • Ambidextrous design with swappable grips and adjustable wrist rest
  • Twist rudder with a lock for use with dedicated pedals
  • Single pass-through connection to the console through the flight stick

How the VelocityOne H.O.T.A.S. compares to other Xbox flight controls

The choice on console has traditionally been narrow. A gamepad, a licensed yoke, or a single stick with a handful of buttons and everything else buried in a menu. Twin-engine management and combat controls have generally been the first casualties.

This system changes the arithmetic by bringing 73 inputs and 15 axes to a licensed console device. The dual encoder cockpit dial with its tri-position mode switch alone accounts for up to nine functions, which is usually where navigation and autopilot commands go on PC and where console pilots have historically had nowhere to put them. The Flight Management Display then handles dead zones, curves and profiles on the device itself, which matters far more on console than it does on PC because there is no second monitor to fall back on.

If you fly on Xbox but want a single stick rather than the full system, the VelocityOne Flightstick II for Xbox is the same stick sold on its own.

16-bit Hall-effect sensing on a console flight stick

Putting 16-bit Hall-effect sensing on the main pitch and roll axes is not a normal thing to find on a console peripheral. It resolves over 65,000 discrete positions per axis, which is the difference between chasing a heading and holding one.

You notice it in the small inputs. Holding a glidepath in gusty air, tracking a target through a slow turn, or keeping a formation position all rely on corrections finer than coarse sensing can express. Non-contact sensors also mean no wiper wearing a track, so the stick should not develop the centre drift that eventually catches up with cheaper hardware.

Twin-lever thrust control on Xbox

Two independent levers with a lock cover both cases properly. Unlocked, they give you real asymmetric thrust for twin-engine aircraft, which is the whole point of flying a twin in the first place. Locked together, they behave as a single throttle for singles and for most space sims.

The detent cartridges are swappable, so the physical stop under your hand at afterburner, idle or reverse is mechanical rather than a message on screen. Tension adjusts separately, and the LED throttle bar indicators run alongside the levers so thrust position is readable without taking your eyes off the horizon. Note that sim-assigned data on those LEDs is a PC feature.

Fits your hands, whichever hand you fly with

The stick is genuinely ambidextrous rather than nominally so. The wrist rest and thumb rest adjust, and the grip inserts swap, so a left-handed pilot gets the same geometry as a right-handed one rather than a compromise.

Three spring tension settings sit behind that. Firm for the weight of a large aircraft, light for the reaction speed a dogfight or a space combat sim asks for, and a middle setting that suits most flying. The twist rudder locks out cleanly if you add dedicated pedals, so nothing fights you when the setup changes.

What the VelocityOne H.O.T.A.S. for Xbox works with

On Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One you get full support in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 and 2020, with Star Wars Squadrons, Elite Dangerous and War Thunder supported through compatibility mode. The system is not compatible with Xbox Cloud streaming. On Windows 10 and 11 it carries the wider PC title list including X-Plane, DCS World, Star Citizen and Prepar3D.

If you only ever fly on PC, the VelocityOne H.O.T.A.S. for PC is the model built for that and skips the console licensing.

Mounting is the same on both. Rubber feet for desk use, or pre-drilled holes and supplied screws for a permanent cockpit position, including onto the VelocityOne Universal Sim Mount.

Our expert take

"We have been flying the Xbox H.O.T.A.S. at our Dandenong showroom ahead of release, and there is very little else on console that puts 16-bit Hall-effect sensing and 73 inputs in front of a pilot. Running the throttle through the stick keeps it to a single licensed device, and in our testing the console recognised it straight away with nothing to install."

"Two caveats we ran into ourselves. It does not work with Xbox Cloud streaming, and the LED throttle bars only sync to sim-assigned data on PC, so on console they show lever position. Neither is a dealbreaker, but both are easier to hear now than after it arrives."

Frequently asked questions

How does it connect to an Xbox?

The Dual Throttle connects to the Flightstick II with the supplied 2m USB-C to USB-C cable, and the stick connects to the console. That pass-through arrangement means the console sees one licensed device. On PC the two units connect independently instead, using the supplied USB-C to USB-A adapter for the throttle.

Does it work with Xbox Cloud gaming?

No. The system is not compatible with Xbox Cloud streaming. It needs to be connected to an Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One directly, or to a Windows 10 or 11 PC.

Which titles are fully supported on console?

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 and 2020 have full support. Star Wars Squadrons, Elite Dangerous and War Thunder run through compatibility mode, which means the hardware is recognised but you should expect to map controls manually rather than getting a ready-made profile.

Can I use it on PC as well as Xbox?

Yes. The Xbox model also runs on Windows 10 and 11, where it picks up the wider title list including X-Plane 11 and 12, DCS World, Star Citizen, Ace Combat, Everspace 2, Rise of Flight and Prepar3D. If PC is the only platform you care about, the VelocityOne H.O.T.A.S. for PC is the version to buy.

Is it suitable for a left-handed pilot?

Yes, and properly rather than nominally. The wrist and thumb rests adjust and the grip inserts swap, so the stick can be set up for either hand without losing geometry. It is one of the few sticks at this level where left-handed use is not an afterthought.

Can I add rudder pedals later?

Yes. The stick has a twist rudder with a lock, so when you fit the VelocityOne Rudder Pedals you lock the twist out and the yaw axis moves to the pedals cleanly.
