Description

Trak Racer PC & Control Box Shelf for TR8 Pro & TRX

A tower sitting on the floor beside a cockpit breathes carpet, catches feet and puts every cable at exactly the height a caster wants to find. Lifting it onto the rig solves all three at once.

This shelf is drawn for the TR8 Pro and the Alpine Racing TRX specifically, bolting to the cockpit itself rather than to a monitor stand. The plate measures 620 by 222mm and takes a PC case or a control box.

Slots are built into the plate for PC straps, so a machine larger than the plate can still be carried safely. It sits with the rest of the racing simulator accessories.

Key features

  • Plate measures 620 x 222mm (24.4 x 8.75 inches)
  • Mounts to the TR8 Pro and Alpine Racing TRX cockpits
  • Built-in slots for PC straps
  • Takes a case larger than the plate when strapped
  • Bolts to the rig rather than a monitor stand
  • Lifts the tower clear of floor dust and cables
  • Mounting plates included
  • All fixing screws and nuts supplied

Off the floor, onto the rig

The practical argument is dust. A tower on carpet pulls fibres straight through the front filter, and a machine driving a sim rig is already working hard enough without breathing the floor.

The rest is cabling and clearance. With the case up on the chassis the runs to the monitor and the wheelbase are short and overhead rather than snaking across the floor where a caster or a chair leg can find them.

It also tidies the whole build visually, which is not nothing on a cockpit people have spent real money assembling.

Straps, not just a shelf

The detail that makes this usable is the slots. Trak Racer build them into the plate for PC straps, which are recommended and not included, and they are what let you carry a case bigger than the plate itself.

That matters because full towers are longer than 620mm is generous for, and a plate that only fits small cases would rule out most gaming machines. Strapped down, the overhang is not a problem.

Under a strong wheelbase or a bass shaker, straps are worth using regardless of case size. Anything not physically located on a rig eventually moves.

Which shelf you need

Trak Racer make two PC shelves and they attach to different things, which is the only thing you need to get right when choosing.

This one bolts to the cockpit, and Trak Racer name the TR8 Pro and the Alpine Racing TRX. The other PC and control box shelf bolts to Trak Racer tubular monitor stands including the TR8 integrated stand, and uses pressed folds rather than straps to stop the case moving.

On a TR8 Pro you could run either, depending on whether you would rather hang the machine off the chassis or off the screen structure. If you are unsure, tell us what you have and we will sort it out.

Our expert take

"The dust argument is the one that persuades people and the one nobody thinks of first. A tower on carpet clogs its intake filters in a fraction of the time it would at desk height, and most people diagnose that as the machine getting old."

"Use the straps. They are not included and they are the entire retention system on this shelf, which is a deliberate design choice because it lets the plate carry a case bigger than itself. Without them you have a flat steel plate and a heavy computer."
