Description

The longest M8 in the range

When a joint stacks up, the fastener has to grow with it. A bracket on a plate on a spacer adds up quickly, and at some point 25mm stops reaching far enough into the nut to hold the assembly safely.

M8 x 30mm is the answer to that, in hardened high-strength steel with a hex head. Five come in the pack, which is the right quantity for the small number of deep joints a typical rig actually has.

Trak Racer M8 x 30mm hardened hex screws

Key features

  • M8 x 30mm
  • Hardened high-strength steel
  • Hex head
  • Pack of five

Thread engagement is the whole point

A bolted joint is only as strong as the length of thread carrying the load. The working rule for steel into steel is at least one thread diameter of engagement, so an M8 fastener wants a minimum of 8mm engaged in the nut. Anything less and the threads carry more load than they were designed to.

Add up the thickness of everything between the head and the nut, then make sure what is left over clears that minimum comfortably. If you have added a 5mm spacer kit under a wheelbase, that 5mm has to come from somewhere, and this is usually where it comes from. Our direct drive wheelbases and the mounts that go with them are the common case. Shorter lengths are stocked in our racing simulator accessories range for everything else.

Our expert take

"Long screws exist for stacked joints, not as a general upgrade. A 30mm screw in a joint that needed 20mm will bottom out in the nut and feel tight while doing nothing. Match the length to the stack every time."

- Blake Sterling, Founder & CEO, Gamer Gear Direct

Frequently asked questions

When do I need 30mm rather than 25mm?

When the total thickness of the parts being clamped leaves too little thread engaging in the nut. As a guide, an M8 fastener wants at least 8mm of thread engaged.

How many are in the pack?

Five.

Can a screw be too long?

Yes. If it bottoms out in the nut or against the back of a blind hole before the joint is clamped, it will feel tight while holding nothing. Match the length to the stack.
