Description

Trak Racer Adjustable Free-Standing Keyboard & Mouse Tray

Sim racing and flight sim both hit the same wall the moment you need a keyboard. Pit commands, radio calls, checklists and every menu in between want a keyboard and mouse, and a cockpit is the worst possible place to put one. This tray solves that by standing on its own legs beside the rig rather than bolting to it.

That free-standing frame is the whole difference. It rolls up to the wheel or the flight stick when you need it, swivels out of the way when you do not, and needs nothing from your cockpit in the way of rails, mounting points or spare extrusion.

It is designed around the TR8 Pro and the Alpine Racing TRX, and because it is not attached to anything it works alongside the rest of the Trak Racer range and most other rigs as well.

Key features

  • Free-standing frame, no cockpit mounting required
  • 360 degree swivel to move the trays in and out of the action
  • Keyboard tray measuring 480 x 200mm
  • Mouse tray measuring 200mm across
  • Mouse tray mounts on either end for left or right use
  • Height and angle both adjustable
  • Safety edge stopper keeps the keyboard in place
  • Powder-coated steel construction in matte black

Free-standing, so your cockpit stays untouched

The alternative to this tray is one that clamps into the cockpit frame, and that only works if you have spare extrusion in the right place and are willing to give it up. Tube-frame rigs like the TR8 Pro often do not, and once a tray is bolted on it lives there whether you want it to or not.

This one stands on the floor instead. Nothing is drilled, nothing is clamped, and the tray can be wheeled aside, moved to the other side of the seat or taken out of the room entirely without touching a single fastener on the rig.

If your cockpit is built from 8mm T-slot extrusion and you would rather have the tray fixed to the frame, the Adjustable Keyboard & Mouse Tray V2 is the version that clamps in.

Positioned where you actually reach for it

The keyboard tray is 480 x 200mm, enough for a full-size board without the mouse fighting it for room, and the mouse plate is a separate 200mm surface that bolts to either end of the frame. Left-handed, right-handed, or simply whichever side of the cockpit has the space.

Height and angle both adjust, and the 360 degree swivel is what makes it usable mid-session. Swing it in for a pit stop or a checklist, swing it out before the next stint so it is nowhere near your elbows.

An edge stopper runs along the front of the keyboard tray so the board does not slide off when the tray is tilted or nudged. Small detail, but it is the difference between a tray you trust at an angle and one you keep flat.

What it fits and what it weighs

Trak Racer designed it around the TR8 Pro and the Alpine Racing TRX Formula and GT Hybrid cockpits, where it lines up with the seating position without any modification. Because it is free-standing it will also sit alongside the extrusion frames in the range including the TR200, TRA, TR160, TR120, TR80S, TR40S and TRK, and alongside cockpits from other brands.

Construction is powder-coated steel in matte black, built light enough to reposition with one hand. That matters more than it sounds: a tray you have to lift with two hands is a tray you leave where it is. Browse the racing simulator accessories for the rest of what bolts onto or stands beside a rig.

Our expert take

"Free-standing is the right call for anyone on a tube-frame cockpit. Extrusion-mounted trays are neater when you have the rail to spare, but on a TR8 Pro or a TRX you usually do not, and a tray that stands on its own legs sidesteps the problem completely."

"The 360 degree swivel is the feature people underrate. A keyboard that lives in your peripheral vision during a stint is a keyboard you will eventually catch with an elbow. Being able to spin it away in one movement is why this stays in the room rather than in a cupboard."

Frequently asked questions

Does it bolt to my cockpit?

No. It is free-standing and rests on its own frame, so no drilling, clamping or spare extrusion is needed. That is what makes it suit tube-frame rigs like the TR8 Pro and the Alpine Racing TRX.

Can I use it on the left side?

Yes. The mouse tray mounts on either end of the frame, so the whole unit works on the left or the right of the wheel or flight stick.

How is this different to the V2 tray?

The Adjustable Keyboard & Mouse Tray V2 clamps into 8mm T-slot extrusion and becomes part of the cockpit. This one stands on the floor beside it. Same 480 x 200mm keyboard tray and 200mm mouse tray, different mounting approach.

Will it work with a cockpit that is not Trak Racer?

In most cases yes. It is designed for the TR8 Pro and Alpine Racing TRX but nothing attaches to the rig, so it will stand alongside almost any cockpit in the racing simulator range or from another brand.
