Description
The part that protects the finish
A bolt head bearing directly on anodised aluminium does two bad things. It concentrates the clamping force into a small ring, and it scores the finish as it turns. A flat washer under the head fixes both, which is why they belong under every M8 fixing on the rig.
Twenty come in the set, which is enough to work through a full build without running short halfway. They suit the M8 fixings used throughout the aluminium chassis rigs Trak Racer builds.

Why the load spreading matters
Aluminium is softer than the steel bolt going through it. Without a washer the bolt head digs in, and over a few tightening cycles it leaves a depression that stops the joint pulling up square. A washer puts a hardened flat face between the two and spreads the force over a wider area.
It is the same reason they belong under a T-nut assembly on a mounting plate. If you are fitting a wheelbase or a pedal deck, put a washer under every head, then add a lock washer on anything that will see vibration. They are a standing item in our racing simulator accessories range for exactly that reason.

Do I need lock washers as well?
They do different jobs. A flat washer spreads load and protects the surface. A lock washer resists the bolt backing out under vibration. On a rig with force feedback, most joints benefit from both.
