Description

Open top, flat bottom

This is the formula shape. The rim is flattened at the bottom for leg clearance and cut away at the top, so the wheel is open at twelve o'clock rather than continuous.

Open at the top is not a compromise, it is the point. Your hands never go there in a formula car, and removing the rim opens up the view of whatever sits behind the wheel. Aircraft grade aluminium spokes with moulded silicone hand grips, on a 6 x 70mm PCD bolt circle that matches the button hubs and quick releases most direct drive owners already run.

Key features

  • 330mm diameter
  • Open top, flat bottom rim
  • 6 x 70mm PCD bolt circle
  • Moulded silicone hand grips
  • Aircraft grade aluminium spokes
  • Clear sightline to the dash

What the open top gives you

Two things. Sightline, because there is no rim between your eyes and a dash display or the bottom of a screen. And weight, because there is less rim to accelerate every time you change direction.

The cost is that there is nothing to grab at twelve o'clock. In formula racing that never comes up, since your hands stay at nine and three and the wheel rarely turns more than half a rotation. In anything requiring hand over hand steering it comes up constantly.

When to choose the closed rim instead

Rally, drift, road cars and anything where you catch slides all want a continuous rim. The moment your hands cross or travel past the top of the wheel, an open rim leaves you holding air.

If that is your racing, the closed flat-bottom version is the same wheel with the top intact, and the round wheel goes further again with no flat section at all.

Grip and construction

Moulded silicone with an anti-slip texture over aircraft grade aluminium spokes. Silicone holds on when your hands are damp, which is when a leather rim starts to slip, and it cleans with a wipe rather than needing conditioning.

The 6 x 70mm PCD bolt circle is the common sim racing standard, so it mates with the button hubs and quick releases most direct drive wheelbases owners already have.

Our expert take

"Open top wheels look fast and they suit exactly one kind of driving. If you race formula and nothing else, the sightline is genuinely better and you will never miss the rim you cannot reach. If you drive anything with a steering lock beyond half a turn, buy the closed one."

- Blake Sterling, Founder & CEO, Gamer Gear Direct
