Description

Light the rig, not the room

Racing in a dark room is easier on the eyes than racing with the ceiling light on, but a screen glowing in pitch black is its own kind of fatigue. A little indirect light behind the rig lifts the contrast off the monitor without putting a reflection on it, and that is exactly what this set is for.

Two 2m adhesive strips are included, each with a 1m USB cable, giving 3m of reach per strip from the socket to the far end. They run off USB, so a spare port on the PC or a phone charger powers them and there is no separate driver box to find a home for on the chassis.

Trak Racer 2m LED strip light set for sim racing cockpits

Key features

  • Two 2m strips per set
  • 1m USB cable on each strip
  • 3m of total reach per strip
  • USB powered
  • Adhesive backing
  • Cuttable to length between marked points

Where to put them

Behind the monitor is the usual answer, and it is the right one, whichever of our sim racing monitor stands you have chosen. A strip run along the back edge of the screen throws light onto the wall rather than into your eyes, which reduces the contrast between a bright display and a dark background. Two strips lets you do the top and one side, or the back of a monitor and the underside of the chassis.

Under the frame is the other popular option. Light spilling down onto the floor around the cockpit makes the rig easier to get into in the dark and looks considerably better than a strip pointed at the driver. Avoid anywhere the light can reach the screen surface directly.

Mounting and cable routing

The backing is adhesive, so surface preparation is most of the job. Wipe the aluminium down with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry before pressing the strip on, because anodised profile picks up a film that will cause the adhesive to lift later.

Route the USB lead along the frame rather than letting it hang. A set of cable management clips in the 8mm slot will carry the LED cable alongside your wheelbase and pedal leads so the whole run stays on the chassis.

A finishing touch, not a lighting system

This is accent lighting. It is there to take the edge off a dark room and give the rig some presence, not to light the space you are sitting in. If you need to see a keyboard or a button box clearly, a small task light will do that job better than a strip behind the monitor.

Treated as accent lighting it is one of the cheaper ways to change how a cockpit feels, and it sits alongside the rest of the racing simulator accessories that turn a frame and a seat into a finished setup.

Our expert take

"Bias lighting behind a screen is one of those things that sounds like a gimmick and then you turn it off after a week and immediately want it back. Long night stints are noticeably more comfortable with a bit of light behind the monitor. Just keep it behind the screen and out of your eyeline, because a strip pointed at the driver is worse than no light at all."

Frequently asked questions

How are they powered?

By USB. Each strip has a 1m USB cable, so any spare port on your PC or a standard USB charger will run them. There is no separate power brick or driver box.

How far will they reach?

Each strip is 2m long with a 1m USB cable, giving 3m of total reach from the socket to the far end of the strip. Two complete strips are included in the set.

Will the adhesive hold on aluminium profile?

It will, provided the surface is clean. Wipe the extrusion down with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry before fitting, since anodised aluminium picks up a residue that stops adhesive bonding properly.

Where should I mount them?

Behind the monitor or under the chassis, pointing away from the driver. Keep them out of direct line of sight and off any surface that can reflect into the screen.
