Our Take

“We’ve tested every wheelbase in the MOZA direct drive range on our rigs and the step-up story is genuinely consistent at each tier. The jump from 15-bit to 21-bit encoder at the R9 V3 is where you start feeling micro-details in the road surface that simply aren’t there at lower resolution. The R12 V2 is the model we recommend most often to serious sim racers who want to stop upgrading and just race. The R21 Ultra and R25 Ultra are in a different category entirely and the flat-wire motor difference is immediately noticeable if you’ve spent time on the lower models. If you’re unsure where to land, give us a call and we’ll ask you the right questions to figure it out together.”

Why direct drive over belt or gear driven

Belt-driven and gear-driven wheels use intermediate mechanical components between the motor and the steering shaft. These components introduce friction, lag, and detail loss, and they wear over time, meaning the feedback you feel changes as the hardware ages. Direct drive removes the intermediary entirely: the motor shaft is the steering shaft, with nothing between them.

In practice, this translates to force feedback that is faster to respond, more accurate in its detail, and consistent session after session without degradation. You feel tyre load building at the edge of grip, road surface changes between asphalt compounds, and the weight distribution shift under braking in a way that gear and belt driven systems approximate rather than reproduce. Every MOZA wheelbase in this range uses true direct drive technology, starting at the R3.

The MOZA direct drive range: model by model

Each wheelbase targets a distinct buyer and use case. Here is the positioning for each model in the current range.

MOZA R3: entry-level direct drive with Xbox compatibility

At 3.9Nm with a 15-bit encoder and NexGen 4.0 force feedback, the R3 is MOZA’s entry point into direct drive and the only wheelbase in the range with official Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One licensing. If you race on Xbox or want a first direct drive setup at the lowest entry cost, the R3 delivers a genuine step up from any belt or gear-driven wheel. Browse the MOZA R3 bundles including PC and Xbox-licensed configurations.

MOZA R3: entry-level direct drive with Xbox compatibility

MOZA R5: first step into serious direct drive

The R5 steps the torque up to 5.5Nm on the same 15-bit NexGen 4.0 platform as the R3, offering more feedback weight for drivers who want stronger force cues on a PC setup. The R5 is also the base for the MOZA Truck Bundle, which pairs it with a 400mm truck steering wheel for Euro Truck Simulator 2 and American Truck Simulator. Browse the MOZA R5 bundles including the standard R5 bundle and the Truck Bundle.

MOZA R5: first step into serious direct drive

MOZA R9 V3: the most popular MOZA direct drive wheelbase

The R9 V3 is where the MOZA direct drive range makes a significant technical step. The 21-bit magnetic encoder divides each full rotation into over 2 million individual steps, compared to 32,768 on the 15-bit R3 and R5. This resolution increase is felt in the quality of detail in force feedback, particularly road surface texture, tyre slip onset, and kerb definition. Combined with NexGen 4.0’s individually tunable feedback elements and intelligent active cooling for consistent performance over long sessions, the R9 V3 is the most popular MOZA wheelbase for good reason. Browse the MOZA R9 bundles including the standard bundle and the R9 V3 with CRP2 load cell pedals.

MOZA R12 V2: enthusiast-grade direct drive

The R12 V2 runs the same 21-bit encoder and NexGen 4.0 algorithm as the R9 V3, but increases peak torque to 12Nm. That additional 3Nm is most noticeable in high-load situations: sustained fast corners, late braking zones, and the initial steering weight in high-downforce cars. The R12 V2 also features enhanced active cooling for improved thermal management during demanding back-to-back sessions. For drivers who have spent time on the R9 and want more torque headroom, or for those building a long-term setup they don’t intend to upgrade for several years, the R12 V2 is the strong choice. Browse the MOZA R12 bundles including the standard bundle and the R12 V2 with CRP2 load cell pedals.

MOZA R21 Ultra: flat-wire motor flagship

The R21 Ultra introduces a new motor architecture to the MOZA range. The zero-cogging flat-wire motor is the same technology used in new-energy vehicle powertrains and aerospace applications, and MOZA was the first sim racing manufacturer to bring it to a wheelbase. At 21Nm sustained torque with NexGen Force U1 feedback algorithm, the R21 Ultra sits in a different performance category from the R3 through R12 range. The zero-cogging characteristic means the motor produces no resistance to steering input except the intended force feedback signal, giving an exceptionally clean and linear feel. Browse the MOZA R21 Ultra bundles including the standard bundle and the R21 Ultra with CRP2 load cell pedals.

MOZA R21 Ultra: flat-wire motor flagship

MOZA R25 Ultra: true torque sensing at the top of the range

The R25 Ultra shares the R21 Ultra’s flat-wire motor and NexGen Force U1 algorithm, and adds a built-in true torque sensor as its defining feature. The sensor measures actual motor output torque at 2kHz with 0.1% accuracy, allowing the base to deliver feedback tied to its real physical output rather than a calculated approximation. At 25Nm sustained, the R25 Ultra is the most powerful and technically sophisticated wheelbase MOZA makes. It is built for sim racers for whom hardware capability is a genuine limiting factor in their performance. MOZA direct drive technology explained

NexGen 4.0 vs NexGen Force U1

All six MOZA wheelbases use MOZA’s NexGen force feedback algorithm, but the R3 through R12 range runs NexGen 4.0 while the R21 Ultra and R25 Ultra run the newer NexGen Force U1.

NexGen 4.0 breaks force feedback signals into individually tunable elements, allowing you to adjust road texture, kerb impact, weight transfer, and tyre slip independently through Pit House. It includes adaptive vibration tuning and cogging torque compensation for smooth steering through centre.

NexGen Force U1 builds on this foundation with enhanced algorithms designed to take full advantage of the flat-wire motor’s zero-cogging characteristics. The combination of flat-wire motor and Force U1 algorithm produces what MOZA describes as the most linear and accurate force feedback response in the range.

NexGen 4.0 vs NexGen Force U1

15-bit vs 21-bit encoder

The encoder resolution determines how finely the wheelbase tracks steering position. A 15-bit encoder (R3, R5) divides each full rotation into 32,768 steps. A 21-bit encoder (R9 V3 and above) divides each rotation into 2,097,152 steps.

In practice, higher encoder resolution means the wheelbase can detect and respond to smaller steering inputs, which translates to smoother force feedback and finer detail in low-amplitude signals like road surface texture and early grip loss. The 15-bit encoders on the R3 and R5 still represent a significant improvement over any belt or gear driven wheel, but the step to 21-bit at the R9 V3 is noticeable in the quality of fine detail feedback.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the MOZA R9 V3 and R12 V2?

Both use 21-bit encoders and NexGen 4.0 force feedback. The primary differences are torque output (9Nm R9 V3 vs 12Nm R12 V2) and the enhanced active cooling system on the R12 V2. The additional torque on the R12 V2 is most noticeable in sustained high-load cornering and under hard braking. Most casual to intermediate sim racers find the R9 V3 more than sufficient. The R12 V2 suits drivers who want more feedback headroom and plan to run the hardware over many years without an upgrade.

Should I buy the MOZA R9 V3 or the R12 V2?

If you’re starting out in direct drive or upgrading from an entry-level belt-driven wheel, the R9 V3 will comfortably exceed what you’re used to and give you several years of headroom to develop. If you’re already experienced with direct drive hardware, want to invest in a setup you won’t outgrow, or spend a lot of time in high-downforce cars in sims like iRacing or Assetto Corsa Competizione, the R12 V2 is worth the step up.

What is the difference between the MOZA R21 Ultra and R25 Ultra?

Both share the same zero-cogging flat-wire motor and NexGen Force U1 algorithm. The R25 Ultra adds a built-in true torque sensor that measures actual motor output at 2kHz with 0.1% accuracy, providing feedback tied directly to the motor’s real physical output rather than a calculated value. The R25 Ultra also delivers 25Nm sustained versus 21Nm on the R21 Ultra. The R21 Ultra is the better value option for drivers who want flat-wire motor performance. The R25 Ultra is for those who want the most technically accurate feedback available in the MOZA range.

Does the MOZA R3 work on Xbox?

Yes. The MOZA R3 Xbox Bundle is officially licensed for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, making it the only wheelbase in the MOZA direct drive range with native Xbox support. All other MOZA wheelbases are PC only.

What is the difference between 15-bit and 21-bit encoders?

Encoder resolution determines how finely the wheelbase tracks steering position. A 15-bit encoder (R3, R5) provides 32,768 steps per revolution. A 21-bit encoder (R9 V3 and above) provides 2,097,152 steps per revolution. Higher resolution means smoother force feedback and finer detail in low-amplitude signals. The R3 and R5 represent a clear improvement over any belt or gear driven wheel. The step to 21-bit at the R9 V3 is noticeable in the quality of fine detail, particularly road texture and early grip loss signals.

Are all MOZA wheelbases compatible with each other’s accessories?

Yes. MOZA uses a universal quick release standard and consistent connectivity across the range. Any MOZA steering wheel is compatible with any MOZA wheelbase, and pedals, shifters, and handbrakes connect natively across all models. This means you can upgrade your wheelbase without replacing your accessories.

Do MOZA wheelbases work with iRacing and Assetto Corsa Competizione?

Yes. Both titles are fully supported across the entire MOZA direct drive range on PC. MOZA Pit House includes game-specific presets for both titles. iRacing’s direct drive support and Assetto Corsa Competizione’s physics system both benefit significantly from the higher torque and encoder resolution of the R9 V3 and above.
