The MOZA R9 V3 is a 9Nm direct drive wheelbase for sim racers who have outgrown a belt or gear driven wheel and want feedback they can actually read through the rim. It is sold here as the wheelbase on its own, so you keep whatever wheel and pedals you already run.
Power comes from a direct drive servo motor rated at 9Nm peak torque and 180W peak power, paired with a 21-bit magnetic encoder resolving 2,097,152 steps per revolution and a 1000Hz USB refresh rate. The housing is aviation grade aluminium alloy, and the unit measures 240 x 157 x 124mm.
If you are buying a base, a wheel and pedals together, the matched MOZA R9 V3 bundle is usually better value. This page is for drivers adding an R9 V3 to a rig that is already part way built.

Where the R9 V3 sits in the MOZA wheelbase range
The MOZA wheelbase range runs from entry level direct drive up to flagship high torque units, and the R9 V3 sits in the middle of it. Below it, the MOZA R5 bundle delivers 5.5Nm and suits drivers moving off a gear driven wheel for the first time. Above it, the MOZA R12 V2 wheelbase steps up to 12Nm for drivers running a rigid aluminium rig who want more weight through the rim.
Choosing between them is less about the torque figure than about the rig it is going into. A desk or a lightweight stand will flex before a 12Nm base is delivering everything it can, and that flex blunts the detail you paid for. On a solid cockpit, the R9 V3 gives you enough force to feel tyre load building without needing the stiffest chassis in the catalogue to make use of it.
True 9Nm direct drive performance
The R9 V3 connects the wheel shaft directly to the servo motor with no belts and no gears. Removing that mechanical slack is what makes direct drive feel different: the force you feel is the force the simulation calculated, arriving without the softening and delay a geared drivetrain introduces.
In practice this shows up in the moments that decide a lap. Trail braking gives you a clearer read on when the front axle is about to give up, mid-corner corrections land where you put them, and oversteer builds as a progressive weight change rather than a sudden snap. The R9 V3 is not trying to overpower you. It delivers resistance that builds naturally as tyre load increases, which is what makes a long stint readable rather than tiring.
21-bit encoder and 1000Hz response explained
The encoder is the part that tells the wheelbase where your hands are. The R9 V3 uses a 21-bit magnetic encoder resolving 2,097,152 steps per revolution, so small steering corrections are registered as real inputs rather than being rounded away.
The 1000Hz USB refresh rate governs how often the base and the simulation exchange that information. Together the two figures decide how quickly a change in grip reaches your hands. Higher resolution gives finer detail in the feedback, and a faster refresh rate means less lag between the car losing grip and you feeling it, which is the difference between catching a slide and reacting to one.
Built for rigid mounting and clean integration
The R9 V3 housing is aviation grade aluminium alloy and mounts through four holes on the underside. An optional side mount bracket and an optional table clamp are both supported, so it fits a full sim racing cockpit or a desk setup depending on what you are running.
Direct drive rewards rigidity. Any movement in the mounting is movement you feel instead of the road surface, so a bolted aluminium profile rig will always give you more of what the base is capable of than a clamped desk will. The connection ports cover power, DC input, emergency stop, USB and a dash, so the base grows with the rest of the rig rather than needing replacing when you add to it.
MOZA Pit House software control
Every force feedback parameter on the R9 V3 is adjusted in MOZA Pit House, MOZA’s own configuration software. You can set overall strength, tune damping and friction, adjust the steering angle per car, and save the result as a profile.
That last part matters more than it sounds. A GT3 car and a formula car want very different settings, and being able to switch between saved profiles rather than re-tuning by hand each time is what keeps the base configured properly instead of left on one compromise setting. Firmware updates are applied through the same software.
Who should choose the R9 V3?
The R9 V3 suits drivers upgrading from a 5Nm to 6Nm system, running a rigid cockpit, and wanting stronger and more defined feedback without moving into the highest torque tier. It is also a sensible choice if you already own a wheel and pedals you are happy with, since buying the base on its own avoids paying again for parts you have.
It is less suited to a driver still on a flexing desk mount, where a lower torque base will feel better because the rig is not fighting it, or to someone chasing maximum force for heavy formula cars, where the higher torque direct drive wheelbases are the more direct answer.

Frequently asked questions
Is 9Nm enough for competitive sim racing?
Yes. For most drivers 9Nm provides realistic steering resistance with headroom left for competitive racing. Torque beyond this point adds weight and detail, but it also demands a stiffer rig to be worth having, and plenty of quick drivers run 9Nm class bases by choice.
Is the MOZA R9 V3 suitable for desk setups?
It can be desk mounted using the optional table clamp, but it performs best hard mounted to a rigid cockpit. On a desk, some of the force goes into moving the desk rather than into the rim.
What is the difference between the R9 V3 and the R5?
The R9 V3 delivers 9Nm against the R5 5.5Nm, with higher encoder resolution. That produces more defined feedback and better load build-up through a corner. The R5 is sold as a bundle rather than as a standalone base.
Does the MOZA R9 V3 work on Xbox?
Yes. Paired with the MOZA ESX wheel, the R9 V3 is Xbox compatible, and the same is true across the MOZA wheelbase range. Will my existing wheel fit?
The R9 V3 uses the MOZA quick release, so any MOZA wheel fits directly. Third party rims need an adapter, and the MOZA Universal Hub Kit covers most common fitments.
