How to Choose Your First Sim Racing Wheel (Without Getting It Wrong)

How to Choose Your First Sim Racing Wheel (Without Getting It Wrong)

Written by: Blake Sterling

Most people get their first sim racing wheel wrong. Not because they pick a bad brand or the wrong style - but because they try to save money in the wrong place, and it costs them more in the long run.

This guide is for anyone who's serious about getting into sim racing properly. Whether you're eyeing GT3 racing, open-wheel Formula championships, or just want to know what all the fuss is about, we'll walk you through exactly what to look for and which setup makes sense for your style of racing.

The biggest mistake first-time buyers make

We asked our team what they see most often when someone regrets their first wheel purchase. The answer was unanimous: going too cheap.

Budget entry-level gear - the kind you'll find at electronics retailers - uses belt-driven or gear-driven mechanisms that simply cannot reproduce the feel of a real car. You'll notice it immediately in corners. The feedback is soft, vague and delayed. It won't teach you what the car is actually doing, which is precisely the point of sim racing.

You don't need to spend a fortune. But there is a floor below which the experience becomes actively misleading. The gear we recommend here sits well above that floor without crossing into professional-level pricing.

The first question we ask every customer

Before we talk about specific products, there's one question worth asking yourself: do you prefer GT racing or open-wheel (Formula) racing?

This shapes everything - the shape of the wheel, the button layout, even how you sit. GT wheels are round, typically 300mm-330mm, and feel similar to what you'd find in a production sports car. Formula wheels are smaller and rectangular (or "butterfly" shaped) with paddle clusters designed for managing a single-seater.

If you're not sure, start with GT. It's more versatile, more comfortable for long sessions, and compatible with a wider range of sim titles. You can always add a Formula wheel later once you know which way you lean.

What's actually in the box: wheelbase vs wheel

One thing that surprises newcomers is that the steering wheel and the wheelbase are sold separately. Here's why this matters.

The wheelbase is the motor unit that clamps to your rig. It produces the force feedback - the resistance, the kerb rumble, the weight transfer you feel through your hands. This is where most of your budget should go.

The wheel (or "rim") is the physical rim you grip, with buttons and paddles. It mounts to the wheelbase via a quick-release system and can be swapped in seconds.

A strong wheelbase with a basic wheel is dramatically better than a weak wheelbase with an expensive rim. Get the base right first, and the wheel becomes a style choice you can refine over time.

Why the MOZA R12 V2 makes sense for your first setup

The MOZA R12 V2 is the wheelbase we recommend most often to serious first-time buyers. It produces 12Nm of torque - enough to feel genuinely physical without requiring the reinforced mounting hardware needed for higher-torque systems. More importantly, it uses a direct drive motor, which means there's nothing between the motor shaft and the quick release. What the simulation sends, your hands feel. Every kerb, every tyre slip, every surface change.

It's a step change from anything in the budget category. And it's the sweet spot where most recreational sim racers land and stay for years.

Choosing your wheel: GT or Formula

Once you've settled on the R12 V2 as your base, the wheel you pair with it comes down to your racing style. Here are our three recommendations based on what works best for different drivers.

For GT racing: MOZA RS V2

The RS V2 is the wheel most of our customers end up with when they're serious about endurance racing, GT3 and touring car sims like iRacing or Assetto Corsa. It's a 330mm GT-style rim with genuine leather, forged carbon fibre paddles, dual clutch paddles and full wireless communication with the R12 V2 base. This is a proper GT wheel - not a dressed-up budget option.

For budget GT racing: MOZA CS V2P

If you want to keep costs down without compromising on the wheelbase, the CS V2P is a smart choice. It's a compact GT rim at a lower price point, still made from quality materials and fully compatible with the R12 V2. You get a proper GT experience at a more accessible entry price - and you can always swap to the RS V2 or another wheel later without changing your base.

For Formula racing: MOZA KS Formula Wheel

If open-wheel is your thing - F1, IndyCar, Formula 2 - the KS Formula is the wheel to pair with your R12 V2. The butterfly-style rim is designed around the ergonomics of a real single-seater: you hold it differently, your inputs are different, and the way force feedback translates through the rim changes entirely. It's a noticeably different driving experience - in the best way.

Our recommendations at a glance

Based on the conversations we have with customers every week in our Dandenong South showroom, here's how we'd break it down:

GT racer who wants the complete setup: R12 V2 wheelbase + RS V2 wheel. This is the combination we show most often on the test rigs. The RS V2 is a significant wheel - it feels like the real thing in your hands.

GT racer on a tighter budget: R12 V2 wheelbase + CS V2P wheel. You're not compromising on the part that matters most (the base), and you can upgrade the wheel any time.

Formula / F1 racer: R12 V2 wheelbase + KS Formula wheel. Different feel entirely - the butterfly rim changes the whole driving position and ergonomics.

You can also grab the MOZA R12 V2 Bundle as a starting point and swap the included wheel for any of the above as you develop your preference.

If you want to see these in person before you buy, our showroom in Dandenong South has working rigs you can actually drive. We think it makes a real difference being able to feel the wheel before you commit.

Quick FAQ

Do I need a cockpit to use this gear?
No. The R12 V2 works with a table clamp or a wheel stand. A full cockpit setup improves immersion but isn't required to get started. Browse our range of wheel stands and cockpits when you're ready to go further.

Can I add load cell pedals later?
Yes. Pedals are a separate purchase and a worthwhile upgrade once you've got your wheel sorted. The MOZA CRP2 Load Cell Pedals are designed to pair with MOZA bases and make a noticeable difference in lap consistency.

Which sim titles work with this setup?
iRacing, Assetto Corsa, Assetto Corsa Competizione, Gran Turismo 7, F1 series, Dirt Rally 2.0, Le Mans Ultimate - all the major titles. MOZA uses an open standard that's compatible with virtually every sim on PC. Check individual titles for console compatibility.
