Fixed Bucket, Formula or Reclining

Three shapes cover almost every rig. A fixed bucket has a rigid shell and deep side bolsters that hold you through sustained lateral load, and it is the default for GT and touring car driving. A formula seat sits you lower with your legs raised, matching an open wheel driving position. A reclining seat trades some rigidity for an adjustable backrest angle.

The honest way to choose is by what you drive and who else uses the rig. If it is one driver and mostly GT racing, a fixed bucket such as the MOMO Daytona Evo is the simplest answer. If you switch between formula and GT, or two people share the rig, recline earns its place.

Why Reclining Seats Get a Bad Name

Reclining seats have a reputation for going soft under load, and for most of them it is deserved. A recliner normally locks its backrest from one side only, which leaves the other side free to flex. Under a strong wheelbase that shows up as a backrest that twists slightly every time you load the wheel.

The Trak Racer RE2 locks from both sides using steel recliner assemblies on a welded tubular steel frame, which is the specification that makes a reclining seat viable at high torque. If you are looking at recliners, that is the thing to check before anything else.

Side Mount or Bottom Mount

This is the compatibility fact most buyers miss, and it is the one that causes returns. Seats fix to a rig in one of two ways. Side mounting bolts through brackets on the shell's flanks, which is how the Sparco and OMP seats fit. Bottom mounting fixes underneath the seat to rails, which is how the Trak Racer RE2 fits.

The two are not interchangeable on a given frame. Check which your cockpit takes before you choose a seat, because the brackets and rails are what decide it. Our seat mounts and sliders range covers both, and sliders are a separate purchase if you want fore and aft adjustment.

Getting the Size Right

A seat that is too big defeats the point. If you can move inside the bolsters you are bracing against the seat rather than being held by it, and the steering precision you bought it for disappears. Too small and you will not last a stint.

Manufacturers publish a waist range and it is worth trusting. The Sparco QRT Circuit II is built wider for drivers up to a 36 inch waist, while the Trak Racer RE2 quotes 28 to 44 inches. Those numbers are on each product page. If you are between sizes, call us rather than guessing, or come and sit in one.

Shells, Materials and Finishes

Most seats here use a fibreglass shell, which is rigid, repairable and the sensible default. Some use real carbon fibre, which is lighter and stiffer again for the money. A few are fibreglass with a carbon look finish, which is cosmetic rather than structural.

The product title tells you which is which, and it is worth reading carefully: a carbon fibre look seat is not a carbon fibre seat. Both are perfectly good, they are just priced and built differently, and nobody should pay carbon money for a finish.

The Brands We Carry

Sparco's QRT range is the motorsport line most sim racers recognise, running from the QRT Circuit II through the QRT Grid-Q, QRT EVO, QRT Rev and the QRT Pro ADV and Pro 2000. The QRT Circuit II carries FIA 8855-1999 approval, which matters if the same seat also goes in a real car.

OMP covers similar ground with the OMP HTE-R, the WRC-R and WRC-R XL, and the RS PT2. MOMO brings the Daytona Evo and the Super Cup. Trak Racer builds specifically for sim rigs: the GT Pro and TR Series GT in fibreglass and carbon, the RS GT Rally, the RE2 recliners, and the HSX Hybrid Formula and HCF for formula seating positions.

Seat Only, or the Whole Rig

Plenty of people arrive here wanting the seat on its own, usually to replace whatever came with a rig. That is a sensible upgrade and the seat is the part you feel most. Check the mounting type, check the waist range, and add mounts or sliders if your frame needs them.

If you are starting from nothing, a sim racing cockpit or a complete racing simulator package will get the geometry right from the outset. And if you want the seat to do more than hold you still, a belt tensioner adds physical feedback through the belts.

Sim Racing Seat FAQs

What is the best seat for sim racing?

There is no single answer, because fit matters more than brand. A fixed bucket suits one driver running mostly GT racing, a formula seat suits open wheel, and a dual-lock recliner suits a shared rig or someone switching between both. Match the mounting type to your frame and the waist range to yourself, and most of the decision is made.

Do you need a racing seat for sim racing, or will a gaming chair do?

A gaming chair rolls, swivels and has soft padding, so it moves when you brake and steer. A racing seat is a rigid shell bolted to the rig, which is what makes your inputs repeatable. If you are running a direct drive wheel and load cell pedals, the seat is doing real work.

How much does a sim racing seat cost?

The range here spans budget fibreglass shells through to FIA homologated motorsport seats and carbon fibre, so there is a wide spread. Prices are on each product page rather than here, because they change.

Will any racing seat fit my cockpit?

No. Seats fix either by side mounting through brackets on the shell or by bottom mounting to rails underneath, and the two are not interchangeable. Check which your frame takes first. Sliders for fore and aft adjustment are usually a separate purchase.
