A DIY golf simulator setup can make this a reality, transforming any room into your personal golf sanctuary.

In this article, we walk you through the essentials of setting up your own golf simulator, from choosing the right space and equipment to understanding the costs involved. You'll learn about the best impact screens, enclosures, mats, projectors, laptops, PCs, and simulation software that will turn your setup into your dream golf simulator.

Why spend time and money during the golf season on frequent trips to the driving range or golf course when you can bring the game to you? This guide is packed with practical tips and expert advice to help you create a high-quality golf simulator that fits your budget.

Optimal room dimensions for a DIY golf simulator

Setting up a DIY golf simulator at home requires careful consideration of room dimensions to ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience. Here are the key factors to consider when planning your golf simulator space.

FlightScope Mevo+ ideal room dimension

Ceiling height

The minimum recommended height is 2.49m or standard ceiling height to allow for a full, unrestricted swing, particularly with a driver. However, this height may not be suitable for everyone and ideally you’d want around 2.7m or higher for a golf simulator. The easiest way to check if you have enough height is to grab a club, stand in the area you plan to install a DIY golf simulator and test if you can swing freely without altering your swing to compensate for ceiling height.

If your ceiling is lower than 2.49m, it may limit your ability to use certain clubs effectively, or you might need to adapt your swing, which can be counterproductive to improving your game.

Room width

Room length

The minimum room length we recommend is 4m. And even then, this minimum length is only compatible with certain launch monitors like SkyTrak or other launch monitors where placement is configured next to the player. If you want to use a launch monitor that needs to be placed behind the player, like Golfzon Wave, Mevo+ or MLM2PRO, you’ll need a minimum room length of 5m to 6m to allow for appropriate placement and distance for these such launch monitors.

These minimums also ensure there is enough space between you and the impact screen and tee.

For an optimal setup, where you’re not limited in any way, we recommend at least 5m. We’ve found this room or area length to be the ‘sweet spot’ for most DIY golf simulator setups.

Additional considerations

Ensure that the room is free of obstacles that could interfere with your swing or the ball flight. This includes removing or securing light fixtures, ceiling fans, and any hanging objects. Also, consider the placement of your projector and launch monitor.

A ceiling-mounted projector can save floor space and reduce shadows, but ensure it is positioned correctly to avoid being hit by the golf club. For limited space, consider using a smaller hitting bay that focuses on practising with wedges and irons.

This can still provide valuable practice opportunities without requiring the full dimensions needed for a complete simulator setup.

How to select the perfect golf net for your DIY golf simulator

When setting up a DIY golf simulator, choosing the right impact screen and enclosure is crucial for creating an immersive and safe golf simulation environment. The Impact screen acts as the projection surface for your virtual golf courses and must be durable enough to withstand repeated high-speed impacts from golf balls.

The enclosure supports the impact screen, shields the impact screen from light for a crisp projected image and contains errant shots, providing a safe and controlled environment. It prevents damage to surrounding areas and adds a professional, polished look to your setup, enhancing the overall simulation experience.

The Net Return Pro Series V2

Enclosures

An enclosure supports the impact screen, enhances safety and provides a professional look to your golf simulator. High-quality enclosures are constructed from durable materials like heavy-duty nylon and metal frames, designed to withstand repeated impacts and provide a stable structure.

Safety features such as foam padding around the screen edges help protect both the structure and players from ricocheting balls. Ease of assembly is crucial, with many enclosures offering straightforward setups through pre-cut and marked pipes and clear instructions, making them accessible even to those without extensive DIY experience.

Comprehensive kits typically include all necessary components, like steel fittings and protective foam, and offer customizable options to fit various spaces and needs, ensuring a professional finish and seamless golfing experience at home.

Impact screens

High-quality impact screens for DIY golf simulators are typically made from ballistic-grade woven polyester, which is durable enough to withstand the force of golf balls travelling at speeds up to 400+ kph.

These screens are known for their robustness and longevity, offering an excellent blend of durability and visual clarity. The tighter the weave of the screen material, the better the image projection, which enhances the realism of the virtual golf experience. Additionally, the size and customisation of the impact screen are crucial.

It’s essential to choose a screen size that matches both your available space and the aspect ratio of your projector. Many providers offer screens in multiple sizes or even custom sizes to ensure a perfect fit for your setup. This flexibility allows you to create an optimal viewing experience tailored to your specific room dimensions.

4 tips on choosing the right golf mats for your DIY golf simulator

A good golf mat should provide a realistic feel, excellent shock absorption, and durability.

Realism and feel

The ideal golf mat should mimic the conditions of a real golf course. Look for mats with textured surfaces and varying pile heights to replicate the feel of hitting off real turf. This allows you to practise your favourite golf shot with confidence and accuracy, enhancing the overall realism of your simulation experience. A very good option could be the Real Feel Country Club Elite golf mat.

Country Club Elite Real Feel golf mat

Shock absorption

A durable hitting mat should offer excellent shock absorption to minimise the impact on your joints, wrists, and elbows. This feature is crucial for preventing injuries and ensuring comfort during extended practice sessions. Mats with thick and resilient cushioning can effectively absorb the shock of your swings, reducing the risk of discomfort or injury. Country Club International Premium Tee Turf golf mat is a very good option.

Mats with thick and resilient cushioning can effectively absorb the shock of your swings, reducing the risk of discomfort or injury. Country Club International Premium Tee Turf golf mat is a very good option.

Size and portability

Consider the size of your practice area and the mat’s portability. Ensure the mat fits comfortably within your designated space. Portable options, such as foam mats or smaller turf-hitting mats, can be easily rolled up or moved, providing flexibility for different practice environments.

DIY golf simulator projectors

A projector is an optical device that projects an image or video onto a surface, typically a screen, by shining light through a small transparent lens or by using lasers. It ensures an immersive, realistic golfing experience by delivering clear, bright, and sharp visuals, even in varying lighting conditions. A perfect projector for a DIY golf simulator offers a balance of the following key features: throw ratio, brightness, resolution, and image quality.

Optoma GT1080HDR

Throw ratio

A short-throw projector is highly recommended for golf simulators because it can project a large image from a short distance, reducing shadows and glare. A throw ratio between 0.5:1 and 0.8:1 is ideal. For example, the Optoma GT2000HDR and BenQ LK936ST both offer excellent short-throw capabilities, making them perfect for compact spaces.

Brightness

Brightness is measured in lumens, and a higher lumen count ensures clear and vivid images even in well-lit rooms. For golf simulators, a minimum of 3000 lumens is recommended. Projectors like the BenQ LK936ST and LG ProBeam BU53RG offer 5100 and 5000 lumens, respectively, providing bright and crisp visuals in various lighting conditions

Resolution

Higher-resolution projectors deliver sharper and more detailed images. 4K resolution is ideal for the most immersive experience, but 1080p is also sufficient for many setups. The BenQ LK936ST offers 4K UHD resolution, ensuring stunning detail and colour accuracy, while budget-friendly options like the Optoma EH200ST provide excellent 1080p resolution.

Image quality and features

Advanced features such as high contrast ratios, colour accuracy, and special modes enhance the overall experience. The BenQ LK936ST, for instance, includes a Golf Mode that corrects colour and image distortions specific to golf simulations, enhancing the realism of virtual golf courses. Additionally, projectors with DLP technology, like the Optoma UHD38x, offer sharp and vibrant images with high colour accuracy.

Top golf simulator software for your DIY setup
