Everything You Need To Know About The Trak Racer TR80 Racing Simulator

Over the past few years, t-slot aluminium sim racing rigs have exploded in popularity due to their modularity and strong but lightweight build.

If you’re looking for a new cockpit – and are interested in taking the t-slot aluminium route – the Trak Racer TR80 is one of the best options available anywhere on the market.

The TR80 Design Eliminates The Dead Weight Without Compromising On Strength

Like all Trak Racer cockpits, the TR80 has been put through rigorous testing to ensure it can withstand hours upon hours of use. Trak Racer are obviously confident that it passed those tests with flying colours because they back each cockpit with a 5-year warranty.

When you actually use one, it’s not difficult to see why they’re happy to offer such a solid guarantee.

The frame is made from premium, 8040 t-slot extruded aluminium. This might not be as dense or heavy as the steel a lot of sim racing cockpits are made from – but, despite its light weight, it doesn’t sacrifice too much in the strength department.

Unlike some manufacturers of aluminium cockpits, Trak Racer have used laser cut carbon steel on the wheel deck and pedal mount as opposed to aluminium. We think this is a smart choice – you really need that extra strength to prevent flex in the wheel and pedals.

Once you’ve got everything set up, you can tell that the decision was justified. There is practically no flex whatsoever in the wheel, and you really get the full experience from force feedback.

The pedal deck is super sturdy as well – you can punch your foot to the floor with real confidence.

The shifter plate is also made using the same steel, and it can be mounted on either the left or right side of the cockpit.

The wheel deck, pedal mount and shifter plate are all highly adjustable, so you can find the perfect driving position. That’s one of the things we love about the TR80 – the fact you can change things to suit your preferred setup. After all, the more comfortable you are, the longer and faster you can race.

You shouldn’t have any compatibility issues with any of the mounts, either, as they’re pre-drilled for all major brands including Fanatec, Thrustmaster and Logitech.

The Modular Design Allows You To Construct The Sim Racing Setup You’ve Always Dreamed Of

Not only is the TR80 very sturdy, but it's also stylish. We love the black anodised finish – it adds a nice touch of class to the rig.

The real strength in the TR80, though, is its modularity. Because of the t-slot design, you can change things around and add new parts to the rig whenever you need.

This means you can customise the cockpit to suit yourself. A triple monitor stand, handbrake mount or even flight sim mounts – you can add pretty much whatever you want to create your ideal rig.

It really is second-to-none when it comes to the ability to customise your dream setup. It’s no wonder many sim racing fans have taken to constructing their own DIY rigs using the same materials. You really need to be pretty handy to do something like that, though – so the TR80 is the perfect compromise.

Enjoy Longer Driving Sessions Without Discomfort Thanks To The High-Density Foam Seat

We all know how essential a supportive seat is. Of course, you need a highly adjustable cockpit so you can find the most comfortable driving position – but that's not going to matter if your seat isn't comfortable.

Fortunately, this is something the TR80 delivers in spades.

The frame of the seat is made from fibreglass, so it doesn’t add a heap of weight to the rig. But the interior is made using high-density foam, which is what we really love about it.

It gives you that extra support you really need to avoid stiffness during those long driving sessions. You can spend a few hours racing without having any problems.

Make Sure You Set Aside A Decent Amount Of Time For The Build

The one downside of the TR80 is how long it takes to build. It’s a task that’s probably best spread over a couple of days. That’s one of the sacrifices you have to make to get something so modular.

We found the instructions weren’t as detailed as they could be, and this makes it a little bit difficult to know exactly what goes where, and when.

If you’re a bit of a handyman, this shouldn’t be too much of an issue. However, if you’re the type of person who struggles to put together Ikea furniture… you might need to jump onto discussion boards and Facebook groups for help.

Once you do have it built, though, it’s worth it. You’ll be more familiar with the design and shouldn’t have any problems adding parts or making adjustments.

Here’s What We Like And What We Don’t Like About The Trak Racer TR80 Racing Simulator:

We like:

  • The extruded aluminium is lightweight – without sacrificing too much strength
  • It’s modular and easy to add parts so you can build your dream setup over time
  • The wheel and pedal mounts are highly adjustable and super sturdy, meaning there is practically no flex when racing
  • The high-density foam on the seat is supportive enough to enjoy long racing sessions without getting sore or stiff

We don’t like:

  • It takes a long time to build, and some of the steps are confusing
  • The assembly instructions need more detail – this would cut the build time down and make it easier to assemble for people without any experience putting together sim racing rigs

Should You Buy It?
