Needless to say, this is an expensive "add-on" but still well worth it if you play Formula1 a lot and have some some spare change lying around. The firmware in the wheel has to be updated in order for the housing to recognize the wheel. The download worked exactly as described and the wheel functions normally. Far and away, the most significant feature of this wheel is the fact that the paddle shifters rotate with the wheel like every other wheel on the market (with the exception of the T500RS). I also discovered a feature not frequently talked about but true to actual F1 wheels ..... you can actually upshift and downshift with either paddle. If you configure the game to upshift with the right paddle and downshift with the left (customary) you can downshift with the right and upshift with the left by pushing the paddles forward instead of pulling them towards you. It may not sound like much but it can free one hand while you answer the phone or take a sip of coffee and still being able to up and down shift when needed with the remaining hand. The large rotary dials in the center section are non-functional and are visual esthetics only. The push buttons, toggle switches and two rotary thumb-wheels provide all the functions normally programmed by any game. Some people have complained about the buttons being hard to access while driving but this is a subjective perspective. It feels difficult at first, especially if you are switching from a wheel with the buttons closer, but aft.
It's perfect. The larger size is much more comfortable than the standard wheels and gives your fingers extra room around the shifters. The Alcantara is fantastically grippy with the Mechanix gloves that I like to wear using it. A huge upgrade over the leather VG wheel and light years beyond the plastic 458 Italia wheel.
I've owned my Thrustmaster 458 Italia TX base for about a year and a half now but it wasn't too long after owning one that the "novelty" of being able to race hypercars in Forza wore off and I began to want more of a simulation experience. Surprisingly it wasn't too long ago until all of these TX compatible add-ons were readily available for online purchase and I was more than ready to upgrade. I recommend getting the TH8A shifter and T3PA pedals first, like I did, and then buying a wheel rim later (unless you have the money to get all of them at once.) The reason being there's much more immersion found in the better pedals and being able to shift H pattern over having a nicer wheel rim. However after getting both the pedals and shifter it wasn't much long after that the original TX wheel rim felt out of place as it's so light, plasticy, and hollow. Also the D shape and huge "airbag" make the wheel almost impossible to hold comfortably any where but 9 & 3 so tight turns requiring lots of wheel rotation wasn't very smooth. Now that I'm done describing how bad the TX wheel rim is enter the TM 28 wheel which fixes all of this. When I got this wheel I was immediately happy by how much more realistic it looks and the very noticeable increase in weight which makes it look and feel as if it is a real steering wheel (just slightly smaller and with a plastic quick release.) Since this rim is completely round and the center of this wheel is much thinner and smaller it ma.
Best Thrustmaster wheel Ive used yet. Feels much thicker and sturdier than the t300rs stock wheel and much better than the F1 wheel. I use this for everything now. The leather could be better, and the yellow ring could be metal (Its yellow leather). The paddles clicks are so satisfying and give an amazing feeling. The buttons have a nice push and dont require a lot of pressure, so you can be gentle or rough with it. Great value for money, must have, and is very intuitive.
Great feel, good vibration and quality. My issue with this steering is that despite a lot of buttons available, most of the are redundant so you still cannot assign useful functions to them. A shame since this was the main motivation of buying this to play Formula 1 games.
